Respected Sir,

I am a B.A.M.S. graduate from DElhi University .I would like to know what are

the job oppor tunities in Ayurveda at Norway or any nearby places.

Also I would like to know whether an M.D. in Ayurveda from India will have a

value abroad as in enhancing job prospects there or any equivalent course may be

persued abroad particularly Norway.

Kindly enlighten me with your expert guidance .

Dear Shruti,

I regret to say that unfortunately Ayurvedic degrees ( BAMS, MD, Ph.D ) from

India have no governmental and FDA recognition in western countries.

All medicos who go there either work as teachers/preachers of Ayurveda and/or as

sellers of Ayurvedic medicines.

You are not allowed to authentically practice Ayurveda and you have no powers to

issue sickness / fitness certificates. You are not enrolled / enlisted in the

state or medical body register. You work there as health consultant /

alternative healer / yoga instructor and practice Ayurveda under such cover. I

don't want to discourage you, but as a responsible member of Ayurvedic

fraternity and President of BAMS Graduates Association (Mumbai Branch,

Maharashtra), I sincerely feel by my heart to put forth the true scenario about

Ayurveda in western countries.

You cannot sell Ayurvedic medicines as medicines. They are sold as Food

Supplements or herbs for general health and well-being, just like the grocer

sells mustard, cummin, turmeric etc. in India which does not need a permit /

licence to sell.

Still, if you have a strong desire to practice in Norway, you may have to

undergo a certificate training course in herbal medicine approved by the medical

/ government authorities of Norway. Or may be you can get an opportunity to work

in a Panchkarma centre/spa but not with the honour or esteem as a doctor.

Inspite of all what I have said, if you do get to practice honourably as a

DOCTOR without any pretexts or presumptions, please let me know.

Friendly Yours,

Dr.D.B.Muzumdar

16 th May 2007.

Respected Sir,

I thank you for your valuable opinion regarding the matter.

I am currently persuing MD at Guwahati Ay. Medical College and for the past

five months.

I am soon to get married to a boy settled at Norway and will have to move

there by this year end perhaps.

Therefore as these degrees dont hold a value abroad I feel i shall drop the

M.D. Course and look for some other suitable course out there as suggested by

you.

Please also advise me if i can be associated with some kind of Research work

as I am quite interested in research.

Kindly also let me know if any other options can be explored in the related

fields. As I have about six months at hand before I move to Norway will doing a

short term Panchkarma course or something similar help?Kindly suggest.

Thanking You

Yours faithfully,

Dr.Shruti Bhatia.

Dear Friends of Holistic Medicine,

I am perhaps the only Westerner who lectures Ayurveda in India (Gujarat) & Sri Lanka. But you can (if u r open) learn a lot from me. First of all, Ayurveda has greatly been spoiled and its popularity is dropping rapidly in the West, thanks to those who a) regard it as part of Hinduism (thus attracting millions of esoteric and new-age freaks) b) those who want to make a quick buck rather than helping others (unfortunately this counts for India, too).

c) Loads of shipping containers with Ayurvedic products were sent back to India, as they proved to be toxificated. Herbs, tea, oil, medicines etc. with mercury, lead, heavy metals and all sorts of chemical residues (from pesticides, fertilizers etc.) turned these products into "chemical cocktails". Farmers in Kerala are not trained or instructed by the gov. to grow herbs/spices organically. So why are Indians surprised that EU govts. ban Ayurveda step by step?

Secondly, 99% of Indian ayurvedic doctors know little about the life style, climate, diets, social problems, stress etc. etc. in Western countries. Europeans need a European solution (!) to their problems - but based on ayurvedic principles.

I am teaching this to a small audience who usually is very successful after attending my courses. For any further information please contact me directly. However, I teach only to those (MD or non-MD) who have the heart to help others. Business-minded folks can go to other schools, please.
