Guest guest
First of all thanks everyone for responding my previous post.My wife is 11 weeks pregnant now and goes to work everyday. She is a computer programmer and her job is sitting at the desk from 9-6 with an hour break for lunch. Her prakruthi is Vata and following is her diet. She seems to be fine overall but going through " normal " pregnancy symptoms such as nausea gas/bloating. Experts please go through her diet and let me know if it requires any changes ? Should she avoid anything in particular. She is not much of an ayurveda person so she is not inclined in taking garbh phal ras or phal grutham. Also since she is going to approach her second trimester any special advice for diet/life style ? I heard that a tea comprising of ginger, coriander seeds, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper corns, mint, lemon juice and honey controls Vata. Can this be given during pregnancy ? 1. Morning 7 AM : Glass of organic low fat milk 8.30 AM: Light breakfast such as Idli or roti made of rice flour ( akki rotti in South India ) Mid morning 10.30 AM is when she feels hungry : Fruit such as apple or banana 2. Afternoon : 12.30 PM Lunch : Orange juice before meals..cucumber or carrot Salad,Rice with sambar, steamed vegetables or lightly spiced mung dal curry , mango 3.30 PM ; Fruit snack : Kiwi fruit or apple 3. Evening 6 PM: Warm Milk with Jaggery or honey ( she can't stand plain milk and does not want to use processed sugar ) 8.30 PM : Dinner : Chapathi or Bisi bele bath ( rice and lentil toor daal cooked in Sambar ) Takes her prenatal after dinner She feels hungry in early morning and eats a couple of dates or some raisins kept by her bed Thanks and regards, DT
Guest guest
Congratulations! Having spent number of years in Bangalore, author's mouth waters reading every item of her diet mentioned by you! Only curd rice (mosrunna) appears missing! The curry-bevan-soppu in curd rice is useful to take care of insulin resistance to some extent. Diet seems absolutely fine but two comments: When she takes akkiroti, just prick it with a spoon at few points and have a generous dressing of cow ghee if available there. All other times you have a good balance of fat and proteins along with carbs, but akki roti is without any fat, protein. Indian diet every item has a good balance of fats and proteins. Milk with honey no problem, it is a grounding, building diet. But jaggery, Vaidyas are skeptical. they are incompatible. The combination is used to suppress allergic reactions however, under supervision of course, for a limited period. Garbhpal Ras, Phal ghrutam help if there is a previous history of mis-carriage(s). " pre-natal before going to bed " is not understood by this author. Arrange computer monitor such that it is away from tummy and use TFT monitor rather than CRT type. Let baby not learn programming and withstanding radiations from womb stage itself! Keep walking daily, since job is sedentary only, and you would certainly not like to give birth to a teenager diabetic. This will reduce feet swelling n third trimester. One more comment about diet. No need to take so many herbs/spices separately as enquired by you . Regular sauting spices sauted in ghee are adequate. Spices such as ginger, turmeric, fenugreek are more needed in postnatal stage. When you wrote she is " Vata " prakruti, did you consult a vaidya? He should be in a better position to comment on your diet/other problems. ayurveda , " desert_thought " <desert_thought wrote: > > First of all thanks everyone for responding my previous post.My wife > is 11 weeks pregnant now and goes to work everyday. <snip>
Guest guest
Thanks a lot for your response and good to know that you are familiar with South-Indian ootas . Sometimes we do include mosrunna as well Long time ago when she had sleeping disorder I had consulted a Vaidya and she had determined her prakruthi to be predominantly Vata. And the Vaidya had suggested a tea ( kashaya ) comprising of a tea comprising of ginger, coriander seeds, cloves, cinnamon, black pepper corns, mint, lemon juice and honey controls Vata. So I just wanted to make sure whether this can be given during pregnancy ? Also, another problem I forgot to mention is she still has trouble sleeping. She feels hungry in the night and eats a banana or few dates which are readily available by her bed. 1. Is gasa-gase payasa during ( poppy seeds kheer ) safe during this time ? 2. Do you recommend sesame oil abhyanga on areas other than tummy ? 3. Any tips on treating pregnancy related headache ? So I just wanted to > make sure whether this can be given during pregnancy ? The kashaya comprises warming herbs in majority, and whether balance is achieved, not known since relaive ratios missing. Secondly, now her state may be more complex than when she was not pregnant. Best advise is consult the local vaidya again. > > Also, another problem I forgot to mention is she still has trouble > sleeping. Instead, try aswagandha ksheerpak, the procedure for making is already in archives (search by word " ksheerpak " ). aswagandha contains somniferum, and milk has tryptophan, a precursor of seretonin. Add kala-sakkare and cardamom, when drinking, which makes it more cooling, pitta pacifier. You may add a little gasa-gase to enhance the tranquilising power, but keep it very small quantity, only if standard aswagandha ksheerpak does not help. the late going to bed, TV watching, noisy ambience etc may be looked into first, as a lifestyle correction. Deep breathing etc are many techniques that can be tried. During pregnancy herbs and drugs should be last option. You may also try more legumes in the dinner. Carbs give rapid boost of energy but also reactive hypo-glycemia later. Hunger at midnight is experienced by pittic person, if falling short of proteins and correct fats in diet. Are you using any of the omega-6 dominant fatty acids oils (Soya, Sunflower, safflower, cotton seed, corn)? pregnancy is a higher metabolism state. As she is crossing into second trimester, fat and protein content need to be increased. Author requests Todd to elaborate/comment on this, he has a better perception of this glucose and reactive hypoglycemia issue. Nuts will give some calcium and B-vitains incl folic acids, soaked almonds were distinctly missing in her diet wrote by you. > 2. Do you recommend sesame oil abhyanga on areas other than tummy ? Use coconut oil instead,as summer is about to start in India. > 3. Any tips on treating pregnancy related headache ? First trimester gives such pittic problems. Aswagandha ksheerpak may help. Sleep and headache are connected issues. Milk, Gulkand with Praval, reduce spices, early to bed, morning walk on sprays, grass with dew if available nearby, visiting Gardens with water fountains etc are simple lifestyle changes which may help. Use of Brahmi hair oil, aamla hair oil, massaging soles of feet with cow ghee/castor oil are simpler home remedies. Once again, the number of herbs to be avoided in pregnancy outnumber those which are safe by a factor of 20. Your best guide should be local vaidya. Guest guest
Dear DT, The diet pattern mentioned is quite a standard one. More fortification could be done by supplementing nuts like almonds, pistacchio and the like besides dates and raisins. Ghee and butter from cow's mlk would be a welcome addition. These items are included primarily in Ayurvedic diet of GARBHINI (pregnant woman). Ghee and butter should be taken on hot rice / roti. They should not be used for deep-frying purposes. Leafy vegetables like Spinach (palak), Coriander leaves (kothmir) can be used in plenty along with other vegetables. Garbh Chintamani Ras is a good medicine in pregnancy. It is Gold Bhasma based and can be taken in small quantity. It does not have any unpleasant taste or odour. Use of pepper-corns and mint in the herbal tea you mentioned should be minimal or at best avoided. These herbs are hot and may cause bleeding in pregnant woman. Instead a tea made of Shatavari, Sariva and Liquorice stem along with cardamom would be more beneficial. This tea not only controls Vata but is also beneficial to the gravid uterus and the baby within. Dr.D.B.Muzumdar. Guest guest
Thank you for all the different responses. She is very averse to almonds and cashews. Raisins and Dates are finee with her. She eats in the middle of night when she feels very hungry though. Can you please let me know where I can order Garbh Chintamani Ras ? What's the dosage and when should she have it ? She also has frequent urination problem after becoming pregnant. the allopathic doctor has recommended some Antibiotics. We are little skeptical to use it. Any alternative remedy for frequent urination problem ? I read that Himalaya's Cystone is safe during pregnancy. So can she take Cystone for this problem ? Thanks DT ayurveda , muzumdar <dahpc wrote: <snip>> Garbh Chintamani Ras is a good medicine in pregnancy. It is Gold Bhasma based and can be taken in small quantity. Frequent urination is a pregnancy symptom, not to be assumed as urinary tract infection (UTI). For UTI, 1. Constant urge to urinate say every 10-20 minutes, very little flow comes. 2. painful Urination and leaves a burning sensation. Sometimes blood in urine, as shown by reddish tinge. Turbidity sometimes. 3. Pain in low pelvis area, just above pubes due to accumulation of urine in bladder. Frequent urination and low flow is due to pressure of expanding uterus on bladder. But if there are plenty pus cells and RBCs in urine along with few bacteria also then UTI diagnosis by allopath is correct. If this is so, then mild UTI can be taken care by several remedies at home, no need to take antibiotics. Antibiotics, without probiotics, will bring in yeast infection as a side effect, and also disturb digestion, which is already poor as indicated by gas/bloating. Most antibiotics are harmful to baby in the womb, as an overall result. How to decide whther UTI is mild or severe. First try home remedies and see if it gets tamed. 1. A mixture of 1/2 tsp baking soda in 250 ml glass of water can be drunk to raise the acid-base balance of the acidic urine. (Increase pH of the urine) 2. Consuming plenty of water/water melon juice/grape juice/lemon water/cucumber juice. It cleanses body by diluting and flushing out the unwanted bacteria. 1 tsp Cucumber or watermelon seeds, punded a little and tea made by boiling 2 cups water to 1 cup, taken 2-3 times a day will also cause higher flow and flushing of urinary system. Flushing takes out bacteria also with it. 3. For few days avoid spicy food, Tea/coffee, fizzy soft drinks, refined sugar, bakery, dairy too. If there is low pelvis pain, put some salt in a thin sari cloth, knot it and warm it on chapati/dosa plate and use fomentation. This will cause pain relief. 4. Ayurveda has a number of formulations, but better taken under supervision. Pregnancy is one area where patient visits an allopath (in India) and consults ayurvedist remotely. Chances of conflicting opinion are frequent. Instaed of having second thoughts on what was appropriate, better to follow local doctor, allopath or ayurvedist, since chances of errors should be minimised. Guest guest
DT, Garbh Chintamani will be available at regular ayurvedic stores where you get your other ayurvedic medicines. The dose is one tablet daily in morning till delivery. Frequent urination is a common complaint of all pregnant women. As the uterus grows bigger in size, it starts pressing on the urinary bladder and hence the urine holding capacity of bladder reduces. This causes frequent urination. No medicine is to be taken unless there is any frank infection in urine that too confirmed by urine report. Guest guest
A lot of times in pregnancy the urine may show puss and blood cells if the pregnant woman is unable to drink enough water to flush the urinary system. Even then, if she can try to up her water consumption and drink cranberry juice she need not take antibiotics. ________ > She also has frequent urination problem after > becoming pregnant. the > allopathic doctor has recommended some > Antibiotics. <snip>
