What is the ayurvedic perspective on being on the birth control pill? I

have been on it for 22 years and a couple friends think I am nuts... I

am open to stopping it but I wanted some perspectives...

thanks!

It is not only glands, but all organs of the body stop working, if

their function is carried out by a pill. Thus if you are taking enzymes

for a long time, your pancreas may forget how to make enzymes after

years. Same thing true about vitamin suppliments. And some glands are

sistres, their work is interlinked. Ovaries and thyroid gland for

instance. IN 99 PCOS cases(where ovaries are underfunctioning) out of

100 Thyroid also found to be affected and obesity is the result.

Better have a look at following messages, the last one from an

enocrinologist too!

And even if you are branded nut, do not stop B/C pills suddenly. You

may have to be given few of the phyto-sterol herbs, guggul tablets,

liver herbs etc, to restore natural hormones manufacture again. Women

developed premature menopause, sterility etc as a side effect of b/c

pills, and well known effect of the pills are various reproductive

cancers. But if you get scared, scare itself may sow the seed of this

dreaded disease.

In summary, consult a nearby ayurvedic practitioner and follow his

advice trustfully.

So, When a young woman is stopping the contraceptive pill after taking it for

fourteen years what does she replace it with?

I am trying to work with one lady who stopped the pill and has nnot

menstruated since.

She is very large around the middle now while the rest of the body is normal

sized.

It is very scary to see this.

Her body was pushing out so many toxins through the skin.

That has stooopped now.

But she needs to have a normal menstrual cycle.

Excessive weight gain and missing periods are both symptoms of PCOS. You might

look into that possibility

yes, that is why she was put on the pill at the age of

fourteen.

She suddenly stopped the pill after having been on it

for fourteen years and had a regular period for

fourmonths but it has again stopped for six months.

Well, I know they use the birth control pill to treat

PCOS, but I have also heard of other options such as

removing cysts. I have also heard that getting

pregnant will help with ovarian cysts, but that is not

always something you can just up and decide to do,

also it is difficult (though not impossible) to become

pregnant when you have PCOS.

Dear Mandakini,

I do not think that there can be any replacement to contraceptive pills. There

are no proven medicines for contraception in Ayurveda as far as my knowledge

goes.

However, some unwanted side-effects caused by such pills can be tackled with

Ayurvedic regimes.

The symptoms you have described like amenorrhoea and central obesity will

require repeated Virechan-Panchkarma besides medicines according to the

Prakruti.

Medicines like Rajapravartini Vati, Kumari asava, Devdarvadyarishta can be of

help.

What " body pushing out so many toxins through the skin " mean ?

Sorry for delay in replying.

Aftre taking b/c pill for so long no other method of birth control

seems to be necessary. This is one syndrome where conventional

medicine has given permanent birth control, even after stopping the

medicine. b/c pills anyway lower libido, making no other approach

necessary (Post#9763). With link to anxiety, depression possibility,

room for prescribing more medication opens up (Post# 8353). And a

similar patient experience is stored as " PCOS Story " after

abbreviating/dropping names to protect patient identity, the file

reference is available in a link in previous post#10084.

If you are looking for just herbal birth control at least 60 herbs

are available for safe control. Few of the approaches are reversible

too. Simplest is recommended in Post# 938. And for those who like

scientifically proven or researched approach, see post# 7971 where a

pill made according to Sushrut Samhita recommendation is tried, in

modern hospitals supported by Government Funds.

Question that arises is when we look into ancient texts, we treat

them as Bible and accept everything, but when a folk remedy is

discussed we adopt the attitude " not scientifically proven " . Did

Acharyas conduct any randomized trials? Ayurveda is collection of

mass experience, sometimes orally communicated from one generation to

next. If one restricts to only standard texts or published

literature, the important core of ayur VEDA is missed. The

appropriateness of each remedy is to be ascertained by meditation,

discussion and self experience. Nothing beats the self experience,

the ultimate Guru.

The way to regularising cycles after a long b/c pill is arduous, with

psychological ups and downs, requiring Panchkarma, herbal medicines and Yoga

too. Here Yoga is not only poses but breathing techniques to strengthen Muladhar

Chakra too. Key to protocol is loosing central warehouse of Triglicerides.

I was not asking for advice on birth control.

I have a patient who had taken the pill for fourteen

years due to ovarian cysts and has just stopped and

has amenhoria now.

I want her to start menstruating again.

She is almost going to look into allopathic treatment.

Can aloe help her?

Or ashoka?

I think you can start her on Ashoka and you should convince her to

take atleast for 6 months. In the beginning she will have some

problems with heavy bleeding and i think you know how to control it by

ayurvedic medicine.you assure her she will get regular cycles once she

starts taking ashoka. it is also helpful if you give CP (CHandraprabha) vati

along with ashoka.
