Ayurveda has aspecific concept of ANUPANA which means the substance accompanying

the main medicine.

Generally, if not contra-indicated, Oil is for Vata, Ghee is for Pitta and Honey

is for Kapha.

Generally as rule, Ghee and Honey are not to be mixed in equal proportions when

using for medicinal use is the dictum of Ayurvedic scriptures. Equal proportions

can cause toxic effects, is the claim which is not yet proved but still

faithfully followed by all the Ayurvedic practitioners. They may be mixed in

unequal quantity and is more so used in eye treatments as internal medication.

However, Honey and Ghee is mixed in equal measures along with same measures of

Mlik, Curd and Sugar which is known as PANCHAMRUTA and is extensively used in

religious rites as TEERTHA in India.

Honey and ghee both act as carriers and both enter into the deepest

tissues of the body so are best used as carriers in medicine. Ghee is

an oil of course and therefore is best for Vata and Pitta conditions

and tissues, honey is sweet and hot therefore deals best with Kapha

conditions and tissues.
