Greetings all,

This is my first post in this forum.

My wife is 7 weeks pregnant and the Allopathic doctor said this is a

healthy pregnancy by looking at the scan report. So everything is good

and she has all the normal symptoms of pregnancy like nausea,

exhaustion, morning sickness etc. My wife's dominant dosha is Vata.

I'm looking for specific diet recommendations from an Ayurvedic

perspective and also considering her dominant dosha. We live in the US

and do not have easy access to an Ayurvedic doctor here. Also what

herbs are safe and what are not during pregnancy ?

Thanks,

DT

Congratulations!

Food recommendations for all types of pregnant moms and also

lifestyle recommendations along with some precautionary measures are

given by this author at:

You take care that miscarriage does not occur and God takes care of

your doshas! Even then, if you wish to know specific diets for

secific doshas, the group has files stored in files section. See

file Vata Food Program.doc at our website link

{the link broken across two lines, hence please paste in browser window piece by

piece, same applied to later links in this post]

If this is first pregnancy, it may be better if you take garbhpal ras

and phal ghrut as a precaution against miscarriage. Do not think that

phal ghrut may cause weight gain or heavy baby!

If you are desiring normal childbirth, it may be also advantageous to

carry out yoga, pranayama during second and third trimester under the

guidance of nearby experienced teacher. Here experience means the

one who has guided such students earlier. The benifit of yoga during

pregnancy is more after pregnancy. Author has seen women, who are

moms to three or more, but their body does not tell it. The tummy

returns to original shape later. Oil massage and bastis in last six

weeks also helps normal childbirth and adequate milk for infant! But

this aspect you may ask later. We have a member who has a special

group for prenatal and postnatal care. And being in FL, she may be of

much help to you.

Vist following links which discuss poses to be carried out during

pregnancy. Despit this overdose of info, following the guidance of a

teacher is most recommended. And last but most important

recommendation is " listen to body, listen to baby " .

There seems to be a lot of pregnancy going on this spring! Congratulations all.

I myself am and Ayurvedic practitioner and am pregnant so I've started compiling

a paper on my " good days " for pregnancy. Here are some excerpts on these

conditions.

Pregnancy is a Vata in nature so your wife who's primary Dosha is Vata, will

need to work on a Vata reducing diet, as well as life style. Once she is able to

control the nausea, grounding yoga and gentle pranyama will help with the mind

as well as the bodily effects.

Herbal considerations and cautions during pregnancy

During pregnancy a mild nutritive therapy is recommended.

Avoid taking herbs that are strong or extreme in action like emmenagogues,

purgatives and toxic herbs. Very hot and spicy herbs like cinnamon, ginger and

cayenne should be use carefully, as should very cold and bitter herbs like

goldenseal or gentian.

Use herbs for building reproductive tissue like shatavari,

ashwagandha, bala, white musali and kapikacchu. Tonic formulas such as

Shatavari compound, Ashwagandha compound and Chyavan Prash are indicated or the

Energy tonic (no. 2.) Preferably taken with ghee.

Underweight Vata women in particular should follow a

nutritive diet with tonic herbs. If their body fat level is too low,

miscarriage, difficult birth, or poor health after delivery are possible. Pitta

women should stay cool with anti-Pitta diet and mild spices like shatavari.

Kapha women do well with mild spices like cardamom, fennel and basil to keep

their energy circulating. (Ayurvedic Healing, Dr. David Frawley)

Ginger tea is great for morning sickness, and if made according to one of the

previous posts poses no threat.

Be patient with your wife, listen to her concerns, and don't try to fix all her

issues. Good ears are the best thing a husband can lend in this time. When the

second Trimester starts you will get your " Normal " wife back and she will start

feeling great.
