Guest guest
Hello. I am pregnant and have found since I became pregnant that whenever I eat veggies I get the worst gas. Raw veggies especially give me a terrible tummy ache and the most embarassing gas I've ever had in my life. I miss eating my veggies, particularly the raw ones because there aren't many vegetables that I like cooked. My doctor suggested I take Beano for the gas, but it doesn't seem to do much. Can anyone suggest anything else to help? I don't want to spend my pregnancy eating apples and toast. Thanks!
Guest guest
A little constipation, gas, morning sickness, nausea, dizziness, food cravings, temporary allergy to some foods etc are all pregancy symptoms not to be much worried about. Apart from hormonal changes causing adjustments in the organs in the belly, the reason for gas/bloating could be any of the following: 1. From your previous postings you are still in first trimester, about 2.5 months pregnant. You are in habit of drinking huge quantity of water, this may be diluting digestive enzymes. 2. With a concern on weight, thinking, reading, meditating too much may be causing some stess affecting digestion. In one post you try to relate urinary urgency to liver cirrhosis. stress leads to more acid, more acid eliminates digestive enzymes, causing decomposition of proteins into gas. in the opinion of this author gas is not a issue to be worried bout since about 10 weeks pregnant. But if you are very concerned, try this mild drink from message 5628 Ginger drink: Take 4 cups of water (cup means 100 ml) and keep on fire to bring it to boil. In the meanwhile, take 2 inch piece of fresh ginger root, peel it and cut into thin slices. Add to the boiling water and reduce heat to simmer. After 15-20 minutes strain, add crystal sugar and little ( 2 pinches) coarsely ground cinamon. after it cools to luke warm temperature, add half a lemon juice and drink. You can add honey instead of crustal sugar, but only after water has cooled to luke warm temperature. If you dislike honey/crystal sugar and wish to drop, do not add cinnamon. If someone tells that ginger+cinnamon is 'hot' and should not be taken during pregnancy, do not worry. After boiling, ginger looses its 'hot' property and addition of crystal sugar/honey, lemon changes the pictutre. If boiling etc is difficult due to less time available, take 1 pinch asfoetida, 2 pinches dry ginger powder, 4 pinches black salt and 8 pinches haritaki powder, mix everything together and take in yogurt made from raw milk, only when there is stomach bloating, gas, stomach pain. This is to be taken only when symptoms are present. Not otherwise. The dose is so mild, do not worry about taking it. But knowing pregnant mom nature, author gives another option, You can put the powder mixture in warm coconut oil for 5-10 minutes and apply oil on in a circular area about three inches radius with centre at belly button. For completeness, the same old wisdom repeated here: Take food driven by hunger rather than time of the day, chew well, and eat as slow as possible. Divide what you eat over a number of portions spread over the day. Though spicy food is contra-indicated while pregnant, sauting in ghee by spices improves digestion! A well written guidance on spices is here: http://health.ayurveda/message/593 Best of health... Dr. Bhate ayurveda , " remindersofthen " <remindersofthen wrote: > > Hello. Guest guest
Well, actually the question about cirrosis was about my ex boyfriend, who has a drinking problem and a bed wetting problem. I know that gas is a normal symptom and not something to be worried about, but it is very embarassing at work and when I go out in public. Also, I am getting ready to go to an Army school in which I will be sharing a bedroom with someone who likely doesn't want to be sleeping next to someone who passes gas every few minutes. I am just wondering if theres anyway to reduce the amount of gas I'm passing in a day without taking vegetables out of my diet. Actually, I have the same problem when I don't eat at all, so I don't think even taking vegetables out will help. Thanks. --- Shirish Bhate <shirishbhate wrote: > A little constipation, gas, morning sickness, > nausea, dizziness, food > cravings, temporary allergy to some foods etc are > all pregancy symptoms not to > be much worried about. <snip>

Guest guest
Bodies can sure do strange things during pregnancy. I remember only being able to keep down those horrid instant noodles. At least I did have the good sense to leave the flavor packet alone. If apples and toast are all you can eat right now, please get the best sprouted wheat toast, make sure they are organic apples, and eat them skin and all. Apples are one of the most heavily sprayed fruits. Obviously your body just doesn't want raw vegetables just now, but have you tried them lightly steamed and cooled with a bit of salad dressing? And try one of those acupressure bracelets. I hear they work! Good luck, it will pass... Guest guest
Eat your veggies and increase both your fibers(rotating your whole grains) and your water consumption. Guest guest
Green gram whole and bottle gourd are the least gas forming. I have tried that. Others are welcome to try it out as both the things are harmless and should not be cooked with too much oils and condiments. Juice of raw tender bottle gourd is als taken reducing high BP and cardiovascular problems as also for indigestion. S. M. Guest guest
I drink twelve, 8 ounce servings of water a day, plus green and ginger tea. I also am living almost exclusively off of whole grains. Eating veggies makes me feel sick. What makes the feeling of sickness go away? Guest guest
Hey, thanks! I'll try one of those bracelets. Steamed and cooked veggies I can do in smaller portions. Broccoli I cant do at all, which makes me very sad, because broccoli is my favorite! Ieneke van Houten <ienvan wrote: Bodies can sure do strange things during pregnancy. Guest guest
Can you specify which vegetables cause you gas trouble? It would be worth remembering that raw vegetables have considerable amount of cellulose which cannot be digested by our intestines, which can cause gases many a times. It would be better to lightly steam the vegetables and sprinkle some salt along with mild anti-gas herbs like coriander seed, cummin seeds and turmeric powder which do not have any damaging effect on the pregnant mother as well as the child in the womb. If at all you want to have raw vegetables, better opt for tomato, carrot, beet, corinder leaves. Avoid cabbage, onions, radish, cauli-flower and other pungent smelling vegetables as they contain gas-forming elements like sulfur, phosphorus etc. These elements can be best neutralised by boiling and removing the water before cooking them. In Ayurvedic terms, boiling makes the vegetables LAGHU ie easy to digest. Take care. Dr.D.B.Muzumdar. M.D.(Ayurvedic Medicine) - remindersofthen Hello. Guest guest
Really, every vegetable is giving me trouble. And truth be told, I have gas no matter what I eat, or if I eat nothing at all. Guest guest
Some ideas: Try this mixture 5 minutes before eating: 1 tsp fresh lime or lemon juice 1 tsp freshly squeezed ginger juice 2 pinches black salt 2 pinches ajwan seeds 2 pinches turmeric powder That can help rekindle agni. Also, cook your food well and look at the proper food combinations. Hope that helps. Guest guest
No, no meds. My doctor suggested taking Beano, an enzyme thats supposed to reduce the amount of gas you produce, before meals with lots of veggies, and it helps a little but not a whole ton. I don't understand why veggies cause me this much trouble but fruits don't. --- mohanabhil <mohanabhil wrote: > hav u been prescribed meds by any doctors?if > prescribed pls mail details.. Guest guest
Hi !! Missing your veggies does not mean anything. If you can't take raw veggies, you can take selected green vegitables duly steamed. You take two glass of milk, one egg, one banana and other soup in a very balanced way to upkeep your healthy pregnency. During pregnency, no strong drugs should be taken - no pain killer and antacid. That may effect the foetus. If you have confidence in homoeopathic system of medicine, and you want to take a remedy of certain teething problem of your pregnency, you may log me on subratadashomoeo Dr Subrata Das >Jessika Stone <remindersofthen > > >Re: Missing my veggies >Tue, 17 Apr 2007 09:29:05 -0700 (PDT) > >I drink twelve, 8 ounce servings of water a day, plus green and ginger tea. > I also am living almost exclusively off of whole grains. Guest guest
The reason I asked is because as Vata increases we need our oils to decrease Vata, but I've also noticed that since adding the essential fatty acids to my diet the the gas volume has increased. What I do is take my oils in the afternoon, I still have issues at night.. when I'm in my home, but for the day time I'm not having as many issues. Also, watch your protein levels, I'm not sure if you are pure veg. I am and have also noticed that if my carb/veggie level does not match my protein level, I also have more issues. Try moving your veggies to late afternoon, evening. That way you are not as public with your issues and can still enjoy them. The other person in your life will just have to love you... Also, your pro-biotic may be increasing your level of digestion too, faster process can create more gas. I'm Pitta by nature but have had a sever Vata imbalance since coming home from India and finding out I was pregnant. Between the morning sickness and repulsion to food, and other issues I'm having more issues with Vata's upward mobility, and Pitta's acid balance, which in not allowing me to eat any quantity of veggies without issues of " upward Mobility " . I know you've had " gas " issues before, I'm assuming you deal with digestion issues previous to pregnancy. Are you working on Pranayama and grounding yoga to balance the Vata as well? Guest guest
I'm not doing any yoga because my physical therapist said that the stretching done in yoga is bad for an injury I had. Instead he suggested pilates, and now I am doing prenatal pilates. I'm not a vegetarian but most meat has not held the same appeal for me as it did before I got pregnant. My mom made her pot roast I love so much the other day but it just didn't look good when I went to go eat it. Mostly I am craving seafood which I know I shouldn't eat a ton of because of the mercury. I try to get protien from other sources, but I'm afraid of the effects all the estrogen in Tofu might have on the baby if I am having a boy. Everyone keeps telling me to steam my veggies but I don't like most veggies cooked. That leaves me pretty much with broccoli, snow peas and artichokes that I will eat (I have an artichoke today for lunch, actually), maybe some spinach if its in something. And I have terrible gas no matter what I eat, or if I eat nothing. Its just the veggies that give me a tummy ache. I suppose it might be useful to know that I am a Khappa Pitta. I did not know that pregnancy was vatta in nature. Maybe thats why I have such a difficult time sleeping now. ____ I know you've had " gas " issues before, I'm assuming you deal with digestion issues previous to pregnancy. Guest guest
Dear Jessica, Have you gone thro' my previous messsage regarding this vegetable-gas nexus? But if the problem is still persisting, you will need to have your vegetables sauteed in oil / ghee / butter. In Ayurvedic text named BHAVPRAKASH NIGHANTU, it is mentioned that vegetables (SHAKA) are inferior in nutrition (HEENA), and they should be consumed with plenty of unctous elements (PRABHOOT SNEHAADYA). This must be possibly to counter the gas-causing property of vegetables. The use of olive oil as dressing on raw vegetable salad in western cuisine is a good example. In India, onion, mustard seeds, cummin seeds, bay leaves, turmeric powder and other spices as required are sauteed in cooking oil (coconut / ground-nut / sesame / mustard etc.) and raw vegetables are lightly stir-fried to form a uniform mixture. Such specifically prepared oil is called BHAGAR / VAGAR / PHONDNI. If your gas persists after eating your veggies in this manner, get a course of OIL BASTI, a type of Panchkarma to reduce the VATA element in your digestive system. You may also get your liver reports and sonography done to rule out gall-bladder stones. I would also like to point out that pregnancy as a rule is not VATA in nature. Each woman may have different complaints like acidity which could be PITTA in nature or swelling on legs which could be KAPHA in nature. If you are having difficulty in getting sleep, apply oil to head -crown area and temples in particular nad also to feet-soles in particular. SHIRO_DHARA can also be of immense help.
