One must distinguish between Wilson's disease and the so called Wilson's syndrome (which isn't a real disease but a natural defense mechanism of the body against excess Thyroid hormone). Wilson's disease is a genetic disorder which makes one unable to metabolize copper properly. Many people can manage this disease very well with simple techniques. It does not have to be a death sentence as the poster feared. In natural science the key is to keep the liver in a very mild draining mode. Most of the symptoms of Wilson's come from liver stagnation and the consequent build of copper in the liver. So Pitta and Kapha must be constantly kept from accumulating in the liver therefore many problems will be avoided before they can build up. Veerachana must be done periodically to make sure the Pitta is drained from the liver. One should take liver draining and supporting herbs daily for the rest of life - a good formula that is readily available is Liv-52. Zinc supplementation (Zinc causes the body to release it's copper stores)should be used under the care of a physician in fairly large doses (150mgs. 3 times a day)- this must be monitered and the patient should not use these doses without a physician observing them. A common protocol by Allopaths is to give a short course of Syprine (trientine hydrochloride)a copper chelator - followed by Zinc. Foods high in copper should be avoided - mushrooms, nuts, chocolate, dried fruit, liver, and shellfish. Copper cooking utensles should not be used - water should not be stored in copper pots and copper cups should not be used for drinking. Guest Shashi Kiran
Ayurveda medicines have shown good results in complications arising due to copper accumulation. I have treated a case which was rejected by a reputed allopathy hospital. Except for bilirubin count which hovered around 1.8mg/dl (Normal being 0.4 to 1.2 mg/dl), patient did find relief in all other symptoms. A guest has answered very well the dietic restrictions patients of WIlsons disease need to follow.
