Guest guest
Hello - Is it possible to damage one's health by doing yoga that is not suitable for one's doshic type? I am a vata/pitta, but with a very strong vata imbalance. The ayurvedic doctor was not able to give me specific advice about yoga except for suggesting that I should do restorative yoga only. I was disappointed to hear that. I need more excercise than restorative yoga can provide. I'd also like to become more energetic by doing a little mildly energizing yoga in the morning, although when I do such yoga at night I experience insomnia. Would 30 minutes of mildly athletic yoga in the morning (some sun salutations and warrior poses) followed by 45 minutes of relaxing and restorative yoga in the evening be harmful? Any other input about yoga for vata imbalance would be appreciated.
Guest guest
It is a pre-concieved notion that Ayurveda and Yoga should go together. It may be true as far as lay-practitioners of alternative medicine are concerned. But I would like to point out that Yoga is not incorporated in main-stream syllabus of Kaya-chikitsa i.e. medicinal treatment, of B.A.M.S. course which is the only authentic degree course of Ayurveda recognised by the Govt. of India. A small part of syllabus does cover Yoga, but that too under Swastha-vrutta ie preventive medicine which is taught in the first year of the B.A.M.S. course. Hence a Ayurveda graduate may not be able to discuss about Yoga or include Yoga in his main-line treatment. However, a good understanding about Yoga can always be of added benefit. Guest guest
Cathleen, Let your body tell you what it needs. Everyone is different. Generally speaking, inverted postures are very good for vata. I do all the postures I can do. I do and teach Kundlini Yoga and the postures are in kriyas or sets.
