Guest guest
Dear All I am a student Yoga teacher, hoping to complete my initial qualification in 2 years time, I have been studying for 2 years already! I find now that I am practicing much more regularly and teaching some classes, that I have aggravated a problem in my cervical spine/shoulder. 10 years ago I had a whiplash injury around my 7th cervical verterbrae. I find when I put a lot of pressure on my shoulder/neck too often, that it become sore and stiff, like a muscle pain/like it has been punched, with some pain transference down my arm - I think something touches the nerves in my neck. I am not terribly sure if I have some major problem with it, but so far I have not seen anyone about it...though I probably should as I think maybe some kind of scan might reveal any joint/bone problem It comes and goes, but is always worse when I have been using it or putting pressure on it. Even driving can cause some pain, holding arm perpendicular to trunk seems to not be good. In Yoga, I find shoulderstands can be relieving, but movements like apanasana can be problematic if performed for long periods/repetively (like if you teach!). Even sometimes sitting can make it ache, even though I am careful to keep my neck in proper alignment. I find in savasana that I cannot quite relax this area. It also will not easily medially rotate and although will laterally do so, causes some pain. I can relieve it somewhat, but for instance today it is stiff and sore and holding tension (making me quite tired!). I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as to what might be causing the pain/where it might be located if it sounds like an injury, or any information you can share about healing such conditions? Thank you and sukha
Guest guest
from the description of your symptoms, it most probably seems that you are suffering from compression of the cervical nerve root leading to its swelling. It could be due to reduced space between the two cervical vertebrae and / or protrusion of the disc between the two cervical vertebrae. Before you start any exercise, get a X-ray and / or MRI after a proper check-up from doctor / vaidya. If either of these conditions is detected, then you may have to use cervical collar to support your cervical spine. Traction of neck may be necessary under medical supervision. As far as Panchkarma goes, oil pack (taila pichu) of Sahachar Taila over neck and nadi-sweda to neck and affected arm would be best suited to you.If medicated oil is not available, plain sesame oil may be used.
