Namaste,

I was wondering what makes one enzyme or amino acid differ from another.

Alos hormones, what makes one differ from another?

Do hormones, enzymes and amino acids have names in Ayurveda?

While defining HEALTH, Ayurveda has emphasised on the following aspects of human

being

I ) Dosha

2) Agni

3) Dhatu

4) Mala

5) Atma

6) Indriya

7) Mana

All the gross anatomical features are covered under Dhatu. All of the body

functions are covered under Dosha. Agni is the metabolic power in the body

responsible for gross as well as cellular digestive processes.

Mala consists of excretory elements of the body. Mana & Indriyas are responsible

for Perception, Cognition, Action & Thinking processes. Atma is the life force

personified (Karmatma / Jivatma ).

If we think in modern analogy, hormones, enzymes and amino acids can be equated

with Dosha & Agni aspects. Those elements responsible for neuro-sensory and

locomotor functions can be grouped under VATA Dosha. Those elements responsible

for digestive, metabolic, transformative and thermo-regulatory functions can be

collated with PITTA Dosha & Agni. Those elements responsible for anabolic and

cohesive functions can be placed under KAPHA Dosha.

As there are many hormones, enzymes and amino acids in our body, explanation for

each and every bio-chemical entity is beyond the scope of this mail. We can

always compare the functions of these bio-chemical entities with the described

functions of Dosha and Agni, thereby arriving to definite conclusions.

All the bio-chemical entities differ from each other by virtue of their

molecular structure and the placement of certain key elements like Carbon,

Hydrogen, Oxygen, Hydroxyl ion and the like.

Message 9422 from Ayurvedaonline is very nice comparative discussion

between western and ayurvedic terms, thought you all would appreciate

as I do the vaidya/MD doctor Muzumdar's clarity:
