Our health and life depends on avoiding this poison! As I had written to you before, I found out for myself that my daughter, Molly, was addicted to dairy while she was experiencing regressive autism between 2 and 2 1/2 years-old (March 2005-November 2005). Temper tantrums, loss of language, not ticklish or feeling pain, kicking the walls during the night, not sleeping through the night, not hearing or answering when spoken to, no eye contact at all, stimming and many other autistic tendencies had taken over her sweet personality and covered up her incredible intelligence. Taking her off of dairy was the first step on her road to recovery from autism, although we still have a long way to go. The opiate effect of dairy is very real as I took her off of dairy 'cold turkey' and she went through a miserable withdrawal the second week off of all dairy. The withdrawal included her trying to break the child safety latch on the refrigerator and screaming at the refrigerator for 'cheese' (one word she didn't lose through regression)! My journal indicates that this happened 3x on 11/17/05 just 13 days after taking Molly off of all dairy. She was quite pale and experienced night terrors at this time so we were all cranky from lack of sleep. We knew nothing about autism or the effects of dairy on the brain but we did know our daughter was truly addicted to mac'n cheese, string cheese, Ovaltine in cow's milk, toasted cheese sandwiches, cheesy fish crackers, Go-Gurt, Ranch dressing and many other dairy products while avoiding the healthier foods that we served. Within 9-12 days of dairy withdrawal, Molly was using more words and speaking in simple sentences especially when she wanted something. To make life easier for family life and my food preparation for a large family, we all gave up dairy along with Molly and we all benefited since many annoying and undesirable side effects from dairy disappeared in every family member. Molly has been on a casein-free diet since November 2005 and gluten-free since January 2007 with many organic, whole foods in her diet. We have no desire to go back to consuming dairy products and we still can't believe that it took our family 3 months to get over the cravings for cheese! Move forward to almost a year of developmental preschool, minimal school progress was made by Molly in preschool through December 2006 (very disappointing) but home progress had improved after giving up dairy. We took Molly to a DAN! (Defeat Autism Now!) doctor in late January 2007 and spent the next month having Molly's urine, stool, blood and hair samples sent into labs for analysis (of course, this is not covered on insurance). The results indicate that Molly has environmentally-induced autism or 'regressive' autism caused by food intolerance, intestinal dysbiosis, environmental allergies, impaired detoxification, exposure to toxins in childhood immunizations/flu shot, and a family medical history that is typical of autistic children. This 'leaky gut' and malabsorption problem has caused Molly to have low vitamins/minerals/ amino acids and high levels of some metals/minerals/etc. Therefore, Molly basically has a screwed up digestive system that is affecting her delicate brain and causing these autistic symptoms. I should also mention that Molly threw up colostrum in the hospital and vomited breast milk daily until 10 months of age, as well as frequent diarrhea as a toddler. I believe that Molly was allergic to casein in cow's milk products that I consumed so faithfully while breastfeeding her. My doctor said I needed the calcium from dairy and that Molly had an 'immature' stomach. Molly has always met baby milestones (2 year-old appointment indicated language was advanced for her age!) and was at the top of the height/weight chart so our doctor wasn't concerned. Zantac didn't work either. The end of February, we started Molly on supplements that are typical of the DAN protocol and within days of starting some supplements we observed many improvements. She has much better eye contact, better receptive language, calm/focused times of the day, better balance, more cautious, and a very happy disposition with a smile on her face! Within 48 hours of a supplement called DMG, her expressive language was more spontaneous and improved. We are happy to see our sweet, highly intelligent, little girl coming back to us. Her school progress report was wonderful in late March including many 3s and 4s which means she is making progress and mastering some skills for the first time in developmental preschool. We are overjoyed! This was even with many days absent from school due to diarrhea from detox-type symptoms from starting the new supplements, snow/flooding in our area, and flu/viruses that Molly was exposed to since her immune system isn't working efficiently. Molly is not on Ritalin, Adderall, or any other ADD/ADHD medications that a regular MD may prescribe for autism/ADHD. We tried Adderall for Molly's ADHD in October 2006 but she became violent and didn't sleep well at night. She is taking supplements like Digest Right, Minerall, evening primrose oil, Super Nu-Thera, black current oil, probiotic, CoQ-10, melatonin, DMG and prescriptions for deficiencies indicated in thorough lab reports like glutathione, carnitine, and amino acids her body is lacking. At the playground with my kids just this afternoon, I realized that nobody would have been able to tell that Molly has autism! Grandparents, friends, teachers and even the family dentist have noticed the huge changes in Molly during the last few months. There are many children out there that are going through a DAN doctor (along with behavioral therapies) and actually recovering from autism or at least improving greatly after their guts are healed. Unfortunately, there are also many children out who have parents/grandparents in denial of an autism diagnosis and continue to feed their child's sickness with dairy, wheat, pesticides, preservatives, dyes, processed foods, and many other toxins. I also need to mention, my oldest son had food and environmental allergy testing which the lab results indicated an extreme allergy to dairy! Our DAN/allergy doctor was shocked to see such a high number on the dairy allergy results especially considering that my son has been dairy-free for over a year, even bringing alternate foods to parties, school, and church functions to avoid the powdered milk/whey/casein in cakes, cookies, crackers, and so many other foods that contain hidden dairy by-products. Also, he is allergic to 'cow' food: hay, grasses and pollen so he will be starting allergy desensitization soon. The genetic tendencies or family history that set Molly up for regressive autism include family members with many autoimmune problems like thyroid problems, diabetes, food allergies, cancer (breast/stomach/prostate/lung), environmental allergies, medication allergies, asthma, arthritis, eczema/rashes, and digestive problems including 'leaky' diarrhea in an obese 12 year-old niece who is still consuming high volumes of dairy products. We also have family members (some slender and some obese) with heart disease, high cholesterol/triglycerides, IBS, high blood pressure, ADHD/ADD characteristics, sleep apnea and depression. It is amazing but true that we have family members in their 30's and 40's with 6-12 prescription medication for their health problems! Except our immediate family (2 adults and 5 children), our extended family is still consuming a diet heavy in meat products and have an addiction to dairy products even though we have shared our story with them, your NotMilk emails, and information from many books that I have read during this past year of autism and diet research. Thanks again for your NotMilk article raising awareness about autism and the dairy connection. Guest guest
that is such a wonderful story --- i, too, know of a family who had unbelievably outstanding results with their son who was autistic simply by stopping any and all wheat/gluten products. the mother herself was overwhelmed when she saw the difference and the boy is now eighteen at a technical college and about to get his driving licence!!!!!! all of the above was unthought of only four years ago --- when it was considered that he would likely stay at home, or in a special " half-way " home for the rest of his life considering how severe his autism was at that time. i am so pleased for the author of this letter - such wonderful news for all! , Nandita Shah <shahnandi wrote: > > > ------ Forwarded Message > cohensmilk1 <cohensmilk1 > <notmilk-owner > > Fri, 13 Apr 2007 13:31:29 -0000 > <notmilk > > NOTMILK - A Very Personal Letter From Kimberly > > > > > > A Very Personal Letter From Kimberly > > When I asked Kimberly for permission to share her letter > with you and urged her to have the courage to include her > email address so that you might communicate with her, she > responded: > > " Please do share any of my stories or comments with your > readers...we will never return to dairy products.
