In the last three years Firdosh has received polio drops — the oral polio vaccine (OPV) which is supposed to make the recipient immune to the wild poliovirus — 20 times. “They did not want to test her initially. I insisted that they should conduct a test because she had problems walking; there is little strength in her limbs,” says her father, Mohammed Idrish, who runs a small electrical shop in village Ratanpur Kalaa in Moradabad district in Uttar Pradesh. The test report confirmed Idrish’s worst fears. His daughter

was tested positive for polio. Understandably, Idrish is bewildered. “What is the use of polio vaccine?” he asks. "I am, and have been for years a confirmed anti-vaccinationist.
