Dear Anat,

I understand what you are saying and I agree that our bodies and psyches

want to/will move to stay in balance. We cannot emphasize and manipulate

'positive' feelings and deny the 'negative' without paying consequences

down the road. However, I do believe that we can recognize/acknowledge

'negative'/painful feelings and then, with our thoughts learn to look at

them in a positive way (i.e., believing that there is a message to be

learned from illness). I believe that to get to the ultimate 'positive',

the process is to stay in balance through the acknowledgment of

everything---(say, even hostile feelings toward someone we love.) I

believe we need to process in order to avoid repression, denial and

projection. Our feelings are definitely telling us something about

ourselves. They may or may not be telling us something about another

person or situation.

If we can learn not to judge what surfaces from the unconscious (the

shadow) but treat it in a friendly manner and learn what it has to teach

us. Dialogue is a good way to do this. I do believe the judgment is

appropriate when it comes to decisions and behavior but needs to be

balanced with forgivenesss of ourselves and others.

I remember a book that was helpful to me, --- " Make Friends with your

Shadow " . I forget the author, though.

Thanks for sharing.

Celeste

I read an article that said that positive thinking had no effect on cancer

survival, because basically your cells don't know what you're thinking or

feeling

That is interesting. Everything I have read says the opposite.

We tend to have this notion that our body's are things we use to help us

to do what we want, kind of like a mechanical robot-like body we carry

around. Thinking we can do and be whatever we want to be inside our body,

and it will have no effect or consequences. Illness is a random event in

that scenario.

This is where the mind/body connection comes in. Our conscious and

unconscious thoughts are reflected in the body, and when the body itself

if out of balance, it affects our minds. This is a very intimate

connection.

Research by Dr. Candace Pert, a former government chemist with the NIH

showed clearly the mechanism by which our thoughts and feelings are

translated into amino acid chains, immediately entering and absorbed by

every cell, altering their function and DNA.

Other research on DNA itself has shown that when we are unhappy, angry,

stressed our DNA is curled in a tight helix. When we are relaxed and

happy, at peace, our DNA uncurls and lengthens.

Our body, and cells know very much what we are thinking, feeling, and

carrying around in our unconscious. The implications of that are

fascinating and terrifying in that illness is no longer random, but shows

us that something is off balance not just in our body, but also in our

heads and hearts.
