Or even cheaper than any ointment is plain ice - you can make little ice suppositories by filling a rubber glove and tying off the fingers and then using the bullet (finger) shaped ice cubes - ice is very effective .....

Rawleigh medicated ointment is excellent for alleviating the pain which typically accompanies this condition. It has been very effective in reducing the swelling as well.
