There is obviously something wrong with the statistics in this news report. We know that there have been 255 cases in western UP alone.RegardsPuneet----

http://dailypioneer.com/displayit1.asp?pathit=/bhopal/bhopal1.txtChild hit by polio despite vaccinationVikram Jethwani | BhopalSecond case in MP, 38th in India this yearWith the outbreak of a fresh polio case in Bhind district, the Pulse Polio campaign in Madhya Pradesh has suffered a major setback. This is despite the fact that the victim had been administered polio drops during five such campaigns.

" A Mumbai-based research institute on Tuesday confirmed the presence of polio virus in 14-month-old Shivani, " Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) KM Ojha said. He also confirmed that the child had been administered the drops on five occasions.

This is second instance of polio to be detected in Madhya Pradesh this year. Earlier in June this year, a 7-month-old boy Kapil from Chhatarpur had been found afflicted with the disease. When The Pioneer contacted State Health Minister Ajay Vishnoi, he candidly admitted to the case and said: "

This is a national issue. It needs intense investigation as to why children despite being administered polio drops of WHO standards have been getting the disease. " " Meanwhile we have sent a team of experts to Bhind to investigate the entire matter and the statements of the people concerned would be video-recorded for consolidation of the case and for further proceedings, " he said.

" Whatever may be the political implications of the case, it is my daughter whose life is spoiled, " lamented Shailendra Jatav, a resident of Ranjana Nagar. The victim Shivani is one of the twins, born in July 2005.

Her mother Sunita still does not believe that her little daughter has been afflicted by polio. " What else could we do? We had given polio drops to Shivani on five occasions. The Government should stop these campaigns as they are a failure

, " said the aggrieved mother. The Pulse Polio campaign had been recently undertaken across 15 districts of the State, including Bhind on September 10, and 30 lakh children had reportedly been administered the drops.

This is the 38th case of polio detected in the country this year. In 2005, 20 cases had been reported. Of the 38 cases, 35 are of P1 polio and three of the P3 variety. The P2 virus is reportedly eradicated from the country.
