I need to forward this to several exploiter caste folks i know who grouse on

reservations. Meanwhile in general one feels that AIIMS is somehow reputable

as its a national level institute. Unfortunately the care there is no

different from poorer funded hospitals. Back in 1993 I was spending a few

months in Delhi exploring environ NGOs to work with. At the same time my 23

yr old cousin was admitted there by his company (Hindustan Steel i think ).

The docs wrongly diagnosed him and pumped him with steroids, which made him

bloat up. I " d visit him every other day at 4 in the evening, and could

barely recognize him. Then they rediagnozed him as having multisystem

failure, treated him and discharged him despite advice from another doctor

cousin of mine.

 

That evening we hung out at the light and sound show in the red fort, in the

cool summer breeze after the hot afternoon. saw him off that night. his

folks from Cal were also around for that week. the next morning i hear that

he'd gotten a fever, intense pain and passed away. seems that he should have

been kept in hospital for another week at least to allow some of his

immunity to recover that the steroids and antibiotics had destroyed. anyway

thats not some typical govt hospital where people go to die, but the great

AIIMS...
