1. Regarding Triphala. -------------------------- Dear Jay,When used by a relatively healthy person, Triphala is a greatpreventor of disease. But I cannot say the same about people who areseriously ill. However it can be used as an aid to restore balance inany condition.Triphala helps the immune system and keeps the digestive, eliminativeand lymphatic system healthy, besides cleaning the blood. It isreally a super remedy. My mother was greatly in love with her blood pressure medicationwhich a highly qualified mainstream doctor had prescribed for her.She could not imagine a day without the medicine. If I tried todissuade her she would plead, "You have taken away all other englishmedicines from me, should you take away this too?" Such was heremotional attachment to this last straw of hers.I knew that her digestive system was not working well, she

sufferedfrom severe acidity and gas. She was also constipated and frequentlyhad spells of weakness. I suspected that her digestive system was thereason behind the abnormally high blood pressure. I gave herTriphala, Liv 52, and a senna+bael+isabgol preparation for theconstipation. This improved her general condition tremendously. Whenshe felt better and found confidence in herself I made her stop theBP medicine and offered her Sarpagandha instead. She is now muchbetter and I will stop the Sarpagandha after some time.Patients often use the medicines as a prop. Thus the healer shouldnot only diagnose the illness, suggest lifestyle changes, promotebetter nutrition and precribe medicines, but also know when to stopthe medicines and teach the patient to stand on his own leg. However nowadays we need to have brief spells of remedies likeTriphala and Liv 52 as we are being constantly bombarded with toxins. But we

must also remember that there are various methods of preparingand using Triphala which a Vaidya alone knows.Regards,Jagannath.@, "Jay" <jaydhruv wrote:>i read somewhere that when in doubt give triphala> another saying that goes is " if you dont have mother dont worry as> long as you have Triphala"> If that is the fact for any ailment> should triphala not cure everything. -------------- 2. Meat and Fish. -------------------- I would agree with Jane and hope the moderators pass my post too.Talking about meat, how many of us get "pure" meat? The meat we eatis full of growth hormones injected into the poor animal. Also theanimals are

slaughtered in full view of each other and treated verycruelly before the slaughter. All this causes the secretion ofadrenalin and other poisonous toxins to flow in the blood stream ofthe animal thus poisoning the meat. Again we store the meat inrefridgerators and eat it stale. From the yogic point of view, we inherit the mental states of thefood we eat. As the animals and birds are very fearful while they arebeing slaughtered, they would definitely pass on some of the fear tous. The Mother of Pondicherry was very particular about this aspectwhen she urged her devotees to be vegetarians. In case of fish, the scare of mercury in Tuna fish makes me wonder ifall fish are not similarly affected with heavy metals and toxinsregularly flowing into our oceans and rivers.Good meat and fish are ok for healthy people, but occasionally andnot regularly. Non vegetarian food is ok as lunch but not as dinner. Most of

the cases of piles and anal discomfort is due to the habit oftaking non vegetarian spicy food at night. My above argument holds good in case of vegetarian food too. Wereally must join the organic movement and try to prod our governmentsto promote the cause of pesticide free, and non GM food.I do not disagree that fish is a rich source of fatty acids andthat "paya" or the soup made from the ankle bones of goat is therichest source of phosphorous.I prefer to be a vegetarian unless I am forced to take non veg fooddue to the unavailability of good vegetarian dishes while on tour orwhen forced by relatives to take fish during my vists to their place.I guess we should keep both options open but not become addictivetowards meat or fish. Bengalis are voracious eaters of meat and fishand yet have been reduced to becoming a sick and weak race.Regards,Jagannath.@, "Jane MacRoss" <HIGHFIELDwrote:>> >as a last point, i would disagree with jane that eating meat orfish> makes one more anxious> fear is most closely associated with vata, and meat/fish can be very> effective to reduce vata> there is nothing in ayurveda that says these foods cause fear, andin> fact, just the opposite impression is left<>> Oh I was speaking as a yogi, not as an Ayurvedic person, but thekindly> moderators passed it anyway,>> Best,>> Jane> ----------------------- 3. Constipation: ------------------- Dear Dr Phadke,Thank you very much for this informative post. Constipation is

themother of all illnesses. Nowadays we take fibreless processed foodand also prefer refined wheat fluor and polished white rice. All thisinvariably leads to constipation. We also have the habit of suppressing our urge to evacuate when weare busy. Then there is the modern toilet which does not allow properpressure required for evacuation. We also have the habit of readingour newspaper inside the toilet, seating comfortably on the westerncommode, and use the bathroom as a "thinking" room.We also forget that we should take a light, exclusively vegetariandinner at least an hour before retiring for the night. We ignoregoing to bed by 10PM as our favourite TV serials start at 10:30PM.This severely impedes our elimination system as it works the hardestbetween 10PM to 1:00AM.If all this will not promote constipation, what will?Regards,Jagannath.@, "dr.aashish phadke"<ayurinstitute wrote:> INTRODUCTION TO AYURVEDIC BASTI TREATMENT ------------------------- 4. On bacteria and parasites. ---- Dear Group,This post on parasites being the likely cause of lyme disease bringsup some interesting issues;1. Bacteria are a very big part of our physical composition and areessential for the body to function properly. But why are theyincreasingly turning enemies? Why are they attacking our organs andprocesses and also multiplying unnaturally?I think when we find an answer to this we can find an answer tocancer too as the same phenomenon in cells leads to the

disease.2. The second issue is that of patients searching for and finding theremedy. The patients, like me, search very sincerely and avidly as literallytheir "homes are on fire". Their sincerety and perseverance causesProvidence to help them stumble on the remedy. However they should bevery persistent, pray sincerely and also seek to educate themselvesabout the illness they have. There is another interesting fact too, as revealed to me by SriKrishna Gopal Mishra, a management consultant and a good friend ofmine through the internet. He is a descendant of a family ofayurveds. He says that earlier ayurveds had the habit of cultivatinga particular illness in them so that they could experience first handthe symptoms as well as the exact relief offered by the remedy. Thatmade me realise that ayurveds experimented upon themselves and notupon other unfortunate individuals or on defenceless animals. We

should never forget the contributions of these great souls who puttheir lives at jeopardy to help suffering humanity.Regards,Jagannath. -------------------------------- "Our ideal is not the spirituality that withdraws from life but the conquest of life by the power of the spirit." - Aurobindo.
