Dear ______,Namaste. I share your concern. In fact I did write to both the Health Ministerand Director, AYUSH on this issue. It is another matter that I did not receiveany reply. However I came to know from newsreports that the Govt of India wascontemplating testing the ayurvedic drugs with metal bhasmas on mice and anon-mice species. You will be pleased to know that the experiment on mice hasalready been conducted and the report is now with the Dept of Ayush for furtheraction. The report clearly states that the subject mice did not show any metaltoxicity or metal accumulation in muscles, tissue or fat.I have also discussed the issue in detail with Dr Umesh Das, HOD, Medicine,Govt Ayurvedic Medical College, Bhubaneswar. Dr Das cited several instanceswhere he has encouraged chronic patients under his treatment and who werereceiving bhasma based medication for long periods to go in for heavy metaltoxicity

tests. None of them have come out positive at any time, he pointed out.I have also read about the CEOs of both Dabur and Himalaya claiming that theirmedicines were tested safe and that the FDA was harassing them to malignayurveda. Being a health activist I am fully aware of the discriminatoryattitude of the FDA. They did point out that the metals showed "enormous" metalcontent but could only cite one case of toxicity in a 72 year old patient.Similarly in India too there is a severe paucity of exact instances wheretoxicity has occurred. Recently the doctors of a leading hospital raised a bighue and cry about heavy metal toxicity when our ex-President Dr K R Narayananwas admitted during the last stage of his illness. The doctors claimed that hiskidneys had failed because he was earlier under ayurvedic treatment. The vaidyaschallenged them to produce proof which was not forthcoming.Again our first Prime Minister Sri

Nehru was persuaded by Madam Indira to goin for ayurvedic treatment. Nehru initially refused citing the presence of heavymetals in the medicines but he was convinced otherwise after the results of anearlier test on mice was presented to him. Needless to say he benefitted fromthe treatment and subsequently our Vaidyas have been treating the politicialgiants of our Nation. The name of Dr Shibkali Bhattacharya comes to the mind whowas a regular visitor to both the Rashtrapati Bhawan as well as to the PM'sresidence. Now comes the issue of indigenously prepared medicines prescribed byunlicenced vaidyas who have inherited the knowledge from their ancestors. Thesevaidyas base their treatment upon classical ayurveda which existed beforeindustry oriented made to order drugs were available in the market. Themedicines were prepared by them personally according to the individual needs ofthe patient. Ayurveda showed tremendous and

miraculous results when suchindividualised and vaidya prepared ausadhis were available. Even today manyprefer to visit the ayurvedic ashramas where this ancient method is followed.According to me ayurveda looses much of its shine if standardised medicine isused. We all know that vata, pitta, kapha disorders are never so well definedand frequently overlap. The medicines however assume a particular dosha to bedominant. Moreover much of the dravyaguna of herbal ingredients is lost uponstorage. You cannot compare a freshly prepared tulsi+honey+ginger+golmorichpreparation from grandma with a cough syrup available in the market. If the vaidyas depend entirely on standardised industry manufactured medicinesthen what is the necessity of studying so hard and for so long for an ayurvedicdegree? Even a diploma holder can collect the literature of all products ofmajor manufacturers and start prescribing.Pardon me if I seem

to be rude. But today all ayurveds are filling the pinchprecisely for this reason. Patients are preferring to depend on the chemist atthe medicine shop and purchase over the counter medication instead of consultinga vaidya. I don't really blame them for today ayurveda has become very similarto modern medicine where doctors do not bother to physically examine the patientand prescribe individualised medicine let alone take the trouble of preparingthe ausadhi.Until and unless ayurvedic hospitals and clinics have their own herbal gardensand prepare their own medicines, we cannot hope to see the growth of ayurvedaand the growing fame of ayurveds. Such individual preparations under the directcare of able vaidyas will also do away with the rumours in the market and allaythe fears of the vaidyas themselves as they will be personally supervising theentire procedure. Just observe Swami Ramdev standing up to his claims.

Whatgives him that confidence? It is because he has his own organic garden as wellas pharmacy. What I am saying is very important because very soon the govt will starttraining the modern doctors on ayurvedic dispension and these doctors will thenmerrily prescribe standardised ayurvedic drugs. The people too will prefer to goto them because they perceive the modern doctors to be more "scientific".This brings us to another aspect of the problem. What is "scientific"medicine? The present system of randomised trials has already shown itsshortcomings. Several times in a year "scientifically" tested and approved drugsand devices are pulled out from the market after thousands die of them. We knowthat this happens because a mechanical model is followed and all patients aredeemed equal.Ayurveda is a holistic system of healing. Here we must have a holisticapproach. This holistic approach is what sets apart the

ayurveds from theallopaths. If this vital issue is neglected then it is the ayurveds who willsuffer the most. The vaidyas must remember that the patient is more importantthan the disease. There should be a very close bonding between the two. Onlywhen both act in complete synergy, and the blessings of Lord Siva is upon them, can we expect a complete cure. The holistic healers job is extremely difficult as he has to transform hisbody and mind into a veritable instrument for healing. He himself has to becompletely healthy so that he can give his best. An ayurved cannot fully dependupon diagonistic tools. He has to have loads of experience, a keen intellect anda well developed intution. If classical ayurveda is followed then both the healer as well as the patientwill be benefitted. We can also overcome the inevitable problem of industryprofits and corruption which has today overshadowed all aspects of

modernmedicine. And as regards the NDTV article, let me assure you that all these reports arebeing circulated by reporters who are on the rolls of the drug MNCs. Whenever Isee such reports I counter them with the issue of the use of heavy metals invaccinations and other modern medicines. The media is very quick to point outthe supposed failures of holistic medicine but they prefer to remain silent onthe many glaring demerits of the modern medical industry. Do you think they arenot aware of the issues? They know more than us. The letters of mine which Ishoot to them are edited for errors which I inadvertently make before they arepublished. Only people well versed on the issue can make such corrections.Regards,Jagannath.K <ayur_shakti wrote:>several of these well known companies including Baidyanath, Dabur, Himalaya donot follow rigid quality control techniques. >>
