However, you can also help the process of detoxification by avoiding certain foods completely during the detox programme period, ie, two to three days in every two months. Also, it’s advisable to eat or consume most of them in limited quantities, even when not in the programme period, while completely avoiding the intake of some of them, for example, toxins like alcohol, etc. They are: All wheat products Milk and dairy products Meat and eggs Coffee, salt, pepper, sugar, sweets Junk or deep-fried foods Spices and hydrogenated fats Toxins like tobacco and alcohol, artificial sweeteners, processed foods, food additives and preservatives How you can help your body detoxify

Drink loads of water and eat raw, natural, organic foods, which have high water content. For instance, consuming mainly raw vegetable juice (about 500 ml) is a classic detox technique. Vegetables with good detox potential are carrots, cucumber, pumpkin, spinach, beetroot and tomato. Eat about one kilo of whole fruits like fresh apricots, citrus fruits, papaya, peaches, melons and all types of berries, every day. This detox method can be practised every alternate month over a period of two to three days. Is detoxifying enough? No. Following it up with the right foods, cooked in the right way, completes the circle. Did you know that humans are the only species on earth that eat cooked food? All other animals eat their food in its natural state. However, while it is not really possible for us to eat raw food at all times, it is very important that we eat wholesome, living foods which contain the right combination of various nutrients and living enzymes, for a healthy life. Excessive heating of food kills these enzymes and the body is forced to produce the enzymes needed for digestion. This causes a serious strain on our ‘enzyme bank’ and interferes with the normal functioning of the body. Cooking also destroys vitamins and minerals. It also leads to chemical alterations in the proteins and fats present in the foods. Which cooking method then is the healthiest? Healthy cooking Steaming is the most ideal method of cooking because at 100oC, the nutrient value of the food is retained (nutrients are destroyed at 118oC). Light roasting and stir frying are the next best options wherein the food is cooked for a short time on heat (without oil) so most of the nutrients are

protected from damage. At this point, it is very important to clear the misconception that baking is a very healthy method of cooking, because it does involve the food getting exposed to very high temperatures. Furthermore, oil heats at a high temperature and when we cook food even in small amounts of hot vegetable oils, the nutrients (heat-sensitive vitamins and minerals) do get damaged. The degree of damage will depend on the duration of cooking. Fried foods have also been spoken about a lot, but it must be emphasized that shallow frying is no better than deep frying. During deep frying, only the outer layer absorbs oil whereas during shallow frying, there is a much greater absorption and retention of oil. Therefore, while cooking at home, one must try and reduce the

cooking time and use oil only when required in order to maintain the nutrient density of the foods. 2006Times Internet Limited.
