Common man caught between of schools of medicineWednesday June 21 2006 12:12 IST http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IEK20060621015127 & Title=Southern+News+%2D+Karnataka & rLink=0 HUBLI: The alarming number of people getting affected by chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease in the state, has given an opportunity to homoeopaths and allopaths to pull out their swords to defend the plenitude of their respective schools of medicine in curing the disease.Dr T S Mohan Kumar, a homoeopathic doctor of Hubli, recently

claimed that homoeopathic medicines were effective in curing chikungunya. He said a group of homoeopaths had conducted several tests on patients suffering from the said disease by administering a variety of the medicines, recently. The medicines, Chammomilia and Ledum Pal had produced good results. Patients who took those medicines showed remarkable progress and experienced relief, hence proving that ‘only’ homoeopathic medicines could provide relief to chikungunya patients, he said.Stating that the medicines were not new as they were available in the market for many years, he advised that doctors should use 200 and above potency medicine in an acute condition according to the susceptibility of the patients, and added that so far, he had around 5,000 patients who had shown remarkable progress within a couple of days.According to the report of the National Institute of Virology, the first case of chikungunya was reported in Kolkata in 1963 and the

disease was detected in the state for the first time in December 2005.The report further stated that the disease was not related to eating chicken or bird flu. It should not be confused with other mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, malaria, yellow fever or Japanese Encephalitis. The diagnosis of chikungunya was not easy and the illness was not fatal and no treatment except supportive therapy was required.Meanwhile, Dr A B Hulyalkar, president of the Indian Medical Association, Hubli unit, categorically stated that so far, no school of medicine had invented a specific treatment to cure chikungunya and the claim of some homoeopath doctors in this regard, had ‘no scientific base’.Naturally, it seemed that Dr Hulyalkar was advocating allopathy, but one thing was certain, that including allopathy, no other other school of medicine had scientific reasons supporting the fact that symptoms of chikungunya could be effectively cured. The IMA had not

even conducted a survey on the number of chikungunya-affected patients that had been drastically come down after having consumed Chammomilla and Ledum Pal to claim that homoeopathy was the effective treatment for chikungunya, he added. The doctors claimed that if one person in a family was attacked by chikungunya, it would automatically spread to other members of the same family, so the outbreak of the disease in the region was high and resulted in the mushrooming of doctors who claimed to have cured it.Though the government has made free medicines available in all the health centres for poor patients, there was a general belief among the public that the treatment given by private practitioners would cure the disease effectively.Patients needed to take proper supportive treatment instead of self-medication as the illness was not fatal.Obviously, confusion prevails among the general public on which medicine would cure the disease whether it

was homoeopathy or allopathy. Hence, the government should immediately ask the IMA to give a clear picture in this regard and give the public fewer things to worry about. "Our ideal is not the spirituality that withdraws from life but the conquest of life by the power of the spirit." - Aurobindo.
