Sreemathy said here on Thursday. She said nearly 200 people in the village of Padre in Kasaragod district were afflicted with neurological disorders, congenital malformations, severe allergies, reproductive disorders, cancers and mental retardation. The afflicted people lived in the neighbourhood of the cashew plantations of the State public sector Kerala Cashew Development Corporation, where aerial spraying of Endosulfan was going on for over a decade to control pests. The corporation stopped the use of Endosulfan in the area in 2001 when media reports linked the maladies to the pesticide. Guest guest
When the initial reports of the effect of Endosulphan on the local population was shown by visual media, scores of people maimed and disabled due to toxicity of the pesticide, the UDF Govt. under Antony Govt. asked the Central Govt. to investigate the same and the Officers /Scientists who visited the sites didnot recommend ban of the Endosulphan though ample evidence of destruction of the population was shown. The powerful Multinational lobby bribed its way through and huge areas were sprayed with the pesticide and it was contonued to be manufactured in Kochi so far!! It is a tragedy that Govt.-s in India are immune to such serious issues and seldom and NGO come to their rescue by filing PIL applications as most of NGO-s are supported by funds from abroad!!
