If one continues to ignore the basic nutrient building blocks then any "magic bullet drug" research is domed to fail! On the one hand, he speaks of "declining AIDS cases" which may well be true given the effectiveness of antriretroviral medications. People aren't getting AIDS like they used to. However, the HIV infection rate would be another matter entirely. I am someone who has personally experienced full blown AIDS (disseminated cyrptococal infection with meningits, T cells of 49, and viral load over 500,000 at the time of diagnosis.) I have partially recovered my immune system after six years of constant antiretroviral therapy. One drug (AZT) proved toxic to my bone marrow and had to be replaced, but it is no coincindence that as my viral load became undetectable, my T cells rose and I became antigen negative with respect to the fungus. I have no quarrel with freedom of speech and scientific skepticism, but it would appear that this article is an attempt to find any fault with those who have been fighting HIV simply to perpetuate some of the old Duesbergian denialist theories, which at one time I gave ear to, but which have long since been totally discredited. The fact that some speakers may not have read all of the scientific papers, the fact that they are lax in their statistical knowlege, and the fact that they may have feminist or other political agendas, does not change the fact that HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. I doubt very much that the ratio of AIDS service organizations to those with HIV/AIDS is approaching one to one. As an HIV patient, I fully realize that the pharmaceutical model (kill the virus) has predominated over theraupeutic immune restoration strategies. Promising therapeutic vaccines like Dermavir, which stimulate an immune response to the virus through dendritic cells in the skin, have been put on hold for years despite the promising results in simian models in 2000. I have been fortunate in gaining access to Interleukin 2, which due to recombinant technology can now be mass produced, though very expensive. IL2 is a natural cytokine which stimulates T cell production, and which has permitted some people to regain virtually normal immunity. It is clear that expensive antiretroviral drugs make more money and cannot cure this infection, and that preventitive and immune reconstitution measures might not be as profitable in the long run, but it is also clear that by inhibiting viral replication they do work to prevent HIV infection from becoming AIDS. The fact that AIDS cases in Canada and in other countries with access to these life saving drugs is hardly news.Tom Kara - chrisgupta Recipients Tuesday, May 02, 2006 10:37 PM Biologist reneges on HIV=AIDS theory See also: The Crime Of Asking Questions Chris "Our ideal is not the spirituality that withdraws from life but the conquest of life by the power of the spirit." - Aurobindo.
