Guest guest
Dear Friends, I have been off and on warning about secret genetic drug trials going on around the globe. Now this GM Watch release confirms that the recent drug trial fiasco involved a genetically engineered drug. Already the medical scientists are trying to explain everything away and crying that this incident should not affect further research. Such cover ups should not be allowed. What of "informed assent"? Were the subjects aware that they were being administered GE drugs? In India we have opened the floodgates by allowing drug MNCs to conduct trials. This is unpardonable. The poor and illiterate and also the educated public rarely question what the doctor prescribes. Drug reactions are never probed. This lacunae has been pointed out by an NRI doctor who has lost his wife to the carelessness of Indian doctors. He has now sued the doctors and the concerned hospital for a whopping sum of Rs. 77.80 Crores. His interview on NDTV was immensely shocking as it revealed the total lack of control that exists here. GMW: GM medicine from human/mouse hybrid gene"GM WATCH" <infoWed, 22 Mar 2006 13:46:24 GMTGM WATCH dailyhttp://www.gmwatch.org---"It is possible that the severe symptoms the six men are experiencingare unanticipated side effects of the genetic engineering process, andthis needs to be fully explored,"---GE medicine derived from human/mouse hybrid genePress release, 22 March 2006Green MP Sue Kedgley is calling for assurances that no drug trialsinvolving GE medicines are being carried out in New Zealand withoutparticipants being informed that the drug is genetically engineered. Her call follows confirmation that the medicine (TGN1412) that has leftsix men in London seriously ill, including a New Zealander, wasgenetically engineered and is derived from a human/mouse hybrid gene.Professor Peter Wills of Auckland University has confirmed this aftersearching the original patents that were granted for this medicine.Ms Kedgley says trials involving genetically engineered medicines areinherently more risky than other drug trials because of the possibilitythat unintended side effects could occur."It is possible that the severe symptoms the six men are experiencingare unanticipated side effects of the genetic engineering process, andthis needs to be fully explored," she says."In the meantime it is essential that all participants in drug trialsare informed whenever genetically engineered medicines are involved, sothat volunteers are aware of the increased risk. I am seekinggovernment assurance that this is the case."Ms Kedgley says it is also important that all medicines which arederived from a genetically engineered process are labelled as such."Consumers have a right to know when medicines they are taking arederived from GE, just as they are entitled to know whether foodcontains GEingredients in it or not."Sue Kedgley MPGreen Party of Aotearoa New ZealandRoom 8.06 Bowen HouseParliament Buildings, WellingtonPh: 04-470-6717 Fax: 04-472-6003Email: sue.kedgley--------------------- "Our ideal is not the spirituality that withdraws from life but the conquest of life by the power of the spirit." - Aurobindo.
