Hospital removes wrong kidney

Health officials today apologised to a Scottish man

whose healthy kidney was removed by mistake.

John Heron, who is in his 60s, now faces having his

cancerous kidney removed and will have to undergo

years of dialysis.

The error happened when Mr Heron, a garage owner, of

Lugton, Ayrshire, was admitted to Ayr hospital earlier

this month after a tumour was discovered in one

kidney.

Mr Heron's son, John Jr, and his wife, Margaret, said

NHS Ayrshire and Arran had made a " disastrous "

mistake.

In a statement issued through the board, they said:

" We are devastated by the disastrous professional

errors that should never have happened.

" We want to ensure that everything is now focused upon

providing the best medical experience and care for my

father. We want to be sure that no other family

experiences this in the future. "

The board said it was now planning future medical care

for Mr Heron.

Bob Masterton, executive medical director of NHS

Ayrshire and Arran, said: " It is with deep regret I

can confirm a patient had a healthy kidney removed.

" Our thoughts are with the patient and family, to whom

we apologise for this tragic error. Staff are

supporting the patient and family in planning for the

best possible medical care for Mr Heron in the

future. "
