Guest guest
Dear Friends, The Hindus have the Shrutis and the Smritis, whereby the basic texts remain unaltered but its interpretation according to the need of the age keeps on changing. Our Muslim brothers too have to think on similar lines. Too much rigidity is always counterproductive. It is not that a section of the Muslim society is not trying to bring in the changes. They are trying very hard. And they are succeeding too. Right now the Muslim community is taking a hard look on the way it treats its women folk. But such transitions will not be easy as the liberals within the Moslem society are as much wary of the hardliners as we are. We should encourage the democratic thought process inside the Moslem community. It is best to leave it to them as, being very conservative, they will resent outside intervention. I will appeal to the Moslem intellectuals to try and speed up the process, at least in India, so that extremism can be tackled. Instead of appealing for peace everytime the situation flares up, they should work harder in times of peace. There is a vital area which can serve as the base for Hindu-Moslem unity, the sharing of festivals. In states where the two communities celebrate each others festivals there is much less tension. The situation in India where there is a lot in common among the two communities this is one area which should receive priority. These things have to be sorted out seriously. Unfortunately there are forces who do not want such a reconciliation. That is the tragedy. All these problems surfaced AFTER the partition when political forces came into play. If you ask the elders on this list they will be able to tell you how the two communities enjoyed peaceful coexistence in undivided India. Violence results in killing of the innocents. Such killings should not happen. They destroy the social fabric. They also breed more militancy. This is exactly what the extremists want. In Iraq, the Moslems were a peaceful lot, but just see what happened after the violence spread. Thus we should shun violence at all costs and try to sort out things in a peaceful manner. I think we should be proud at the way Indians have reacted to the recent events. The people are now much wiser and also know that acts of terrorism are not spontaneous acts but are preplanned to incite violence. As Dr Bhashyam said it is now upto the Moslem community in India to seize the initiative and make concerted efforts to merge into the mainstream. Ek hi parivar mein do chulha kyon?
