Malnutrition 'Costs UK Billions' Malnutrition costs the UK more than £7.3bn a year - more than double the bill for obesity, a report has found. However, the British Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition said malnutrition was given a much lower priority by the government. The report estimates around 30% of patients in hospitals and nursing homes are clinically malnourished. In total, more than three million people are thought to be malnourished at any one time. Effects of malnutrition Impaired immune responses Reduced muscle strength and fatigue Increased difficulties in breathing Impaired thermo-regulation Impaired wound

healing Apathy, depression and self-neglect Poor libido This includes 10% of people over the age of 65 living in the community. A report published by the Malnutrition Advisory Group in 2003 warned that many people with malnutrition go undiagnosed. Malnourished people stay in hospital longer, succumb to infection more often, and visit their GP more frequently. They also require longer-term care, and more extensive nursing care. http://www.campaignfortruth.com/Eclub/060306/CTM%20-%20malnutrition.htm "Our ideal is not the spirituality that withdraws from life but the conquest of

Malnutrition includes under-nutrition as well as

over-nutritionn leading to over weight and obesity

inviting a host of diseases. Some suffer and even die

of lack of food and nutrition while others die of

over-feeding themselves leading to many life-style

diseases.

Hence very few persons are properly nourished.

Yet, the subject of preventive and social medicine is

absolutely neglected in medical schools and colleges.

Hence, the Pune-based Society for Prevention of

Malnutrition had designed high protein and

nutritionally balanced biscuits at one-tenth of the

cost of those manufactured and marketed by

Multi-National companies (MNCs).

Those biscuits were analysed by the Govt. of India at

the insatance of former Prime Minister, the late Mrs.

Indira Gandhi and were found to be good for school

feeding programmes under mid-day meal scheme.

But ruling politicians started demanding bribes for

approving them for the school feeding scheme.

During the years 1974 to 1984, all doctors were

recommending them to the pregnant and lactating

mothers to turn the tide of increasing births of

low-weight babies, to the elderly and the

convalescents for better health and quicker recovery

after surgery.

During those years, the sale of costly nutritional

products had gone down in Pune.

This writer was even granted a process patent for the

production of the biscuits. But due to political

apathy and bribery, the scheme did not take off.

Under that process, we could use deoiled but edible

soya bean and groudnut floors, jaggery or raw sugar to

avoid white refined sugar and other ingredients.

If any one wants to exploit that process, I shall be

too happy to brief the person free of charge.

The process is capable of using millions of tonnes of

oilseed residues, edible wheat and rice brans and even

agricultural and forest waste products like drumstick

leaves and flowers, mahua fruits that adivasis

(aborigines) collect, eat or use them for brewing

their brand of liquor.

In India alone, 25 per cent of wheat, rice and legumes

(lentils or pulses) get lost in milling. The bran is

much more nutritious than the refined flour that is

used for white bread manufacturing.

Out of say, 200 million tonnes of foodgrains, pulses,

oilseeds and what not, more than 25 per cent gets

wasted in brans, etc.

If all such waste products are used for making highly

nutritious biscuits as per the patented process, it

should be possible to feed the malnourished people of

the world to banish hunger and poverty from earth.

But all that requires leaders with a vision who are

hard to find. Present leaders in Idia just talk and

talk but do nothing.

When I had successfully filled up a government tender

for the school feeding programme in Maharashtra, even

one of the cabinet minister of the Maharashtra Govt.

came to me and wanted to be a partner in the business.

When I explained him that it is to be done on a

no-loss and no-profit basis, he quietly withdrew. This

is how good public service schemes get killed without

seeing the light of the day.

But I continue to pray to the Lord for sending some

well-meaning person to exploit the process for

betterment of the society.

God has been very kind to this writer in sending His

messenger in the form of Swami Ramdev to help and

fulfil my other dream of total health and wellness

with zero aches and pains without a single dose of

medicine in most cases. Five minutes of the

spine-stretching exercises and ten minutes of pranayam

can help cure or contain many ailments.

I am still praying for similar divine intervention for

preventing malnutrition as well. My heart is crying

and beseeching YOU Lord of Lords to show us the way

and give us enough strength of fulfil our dreams. With

malice towards none and with unlimited love for all,

this is thy own self with humble pranams to all,

S. M. Acharya
