Guest guest
My friend in Nevada is going to have a 5 day Panchakarma retreat with Deepak Chopra - a bargain @ US$3000 eh? Jane PANCHAKARMA According to Ayurveda, Panchakarma, (meaning: five-actions) is considered to be one of the most important and effective ways to detoxify, cleanse and strengthen your body, mind and spirit. Panchakarma is the experience of transformation. You will experience a renewed sensation of healing from within, a powerful and potentially life-changing exchange of energy in your body, rejuvenating your spirit and soothing your soul. During this time of purification and rejuvenation, our primary concern is for your comfort. Each of the daily treatments you will be receiving, are designed to bring you into a deep experience of release. The release of toxins in the system will stimulate the immune system and enliven and invigorate the whole body. We encourage you to be quiet and still and let your body naturally experience healing from the inside out. Surrender to the experience in each treatment and let yourself be transported into balance and bliss. If you are experiencing any difficulties, physical or emotional discomfort or have any questions, please let an educator or Anastacia Leigh, our Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist know. Anastacia is available for private consultations as well. To schedule a consultation, check with the front desk. During Panchakarma, each person will have a different experience. Described below are some of the general experiences and questions you may have during Panchakarma. Day 1 – You may feel tired and experience a small amount of bloating or heaviness. This is due to the basti infusing healing oils into the body. Do not be concerned. If this is uncomfortable, please let the Ayurvedic Specialist or Educator know as soon as possible. You will be given the herb, Triphala, a very effective colon tonic after each treatment. As indicated, take 2 tablets after your treatment, preferably with food, and 2 tablets before bed. Day 2 – Today you may start to feel a little lethargic. Tonight, before bed, take up to four Senna tablets. If you are small framed and light weight, only take three. Senna is a natural laxative and will help in the elimination process and will also encourage any toxins left in the liver to be expelled into the blood. Read the instructions on the herbs carefully; take the two Triphala tablets after your treatment and the Senna tablets are taken at bedtime. We also recommend that you take a warm bath or shower before bed You may experience additional bowel movements during the night. It should be very gentle and easy. Day 3 – You may feel very fatigued today, somewhat like getting a cold, or the flu. This is due to the liver releasing the rest of the toxins into the blood. The liver is working hard to filter the blood of toxins. Emotions may feel engaged more than usual. Use the time to journal and release any emotional toxins that you may have accumulated. Remember, the mind and the body accumulate toxic build-up. Take it very easy today and drink plenty of ginger tea. You may have several stools today; this is normal and should not concern you. The body is simply cleansing deeply, all toxins from the body. If you do have concerns please contact our Ayurvedic Specialist or Educator. If you are leaving today, please follow the directions below and be aware that your body will continue to detoxify and release. Please eat lightly and get plenty of rest. Please let us know if you have any question before you leave. Day 4 – This day you start to feel better and lighter. You may still be feeling a little bit tired, this will begin to ease up, please continue to be easy and quiet. Eat lightly, staying away from hard to digest foods and rest as much as you can throughout the day. Drink plenty of ginger tea to help move those toxins out of the body. Day 5 – Today, you should start to feel more energetic and enlivened. Continue this rejuvenation as you journey home by having the intention of creating health and balance in your life. During your last treatment, absorb the nourishment around you and hold a deep love and respect for yourself and for this profound experience. BASTI During your Panchakarma you will be receiving a basti each day. The basti is designed to rejuvenate and nourish the colon tissues. A Basti is a warm oil enema that gently nourishes the tissue of the colon, which generally experience excess air and dryness. The first day, the colon may respond to the basti with a slight physical movement. As the oil is absorbed into the colon, a slight contraction may occur. You may or may not need to use the restroom after your first basti. Listen to your body and go when you need to. The first and last day of Panchakarma, the basti contains a healing black salt in the oil that will help the colon tissue to be more hospitable to the oil and allow for better absorption. On all other days of the Panchakarma, your basti will contain rejuvenating herbs for the colon. Each basti is a unique experience, so continue to listen to your body each day. There should not be any cramping, diarrhea or forced elimination. This should be gentle and easy for you. If you are experiencing any discomfort please contact our Ayurvedic Specialist as soon as possible. GAS PAINS Gas pains may result from the process of vata (excess air) elimination. To facilitate this release, the following recommendations are suggested: Do not strain to hold the basti. After the basti is eliminated, drink 1 to 2 glasses of very warm water or vata pacifying tea every hour until ½ hour before dinner. Sip small amounts of warm water with your meals. Throughout your ‘panchakarma’ treatment days, sip hot water with fresh ginger every 30 minutes or so. This enhances the purification process. You can find fresh ginger tea at the back of the Dharma room on the counter. At night, massage your abdomen with sesame oil in a clock-wise direction (down on the left side, up on the right). Pay extra attention to the sensitive areas during your gentle massage. Sesame oil is available from your spa therapist. NOTE: Always wear the pad given to you after your basti for you may pass residual oil from the basti. ACHES AND PAINS If you are experiencing a headache or other discomfort try resting with your eyes closed and practicing body centered awareness, which will help to dissipate any localized pressure in the head or body. CHANGES IN SLEEP PATERNS Changes in sleep patterns are common during Panchakarma. Your sleep may seem lighter than usual due to greater restful-alertness and you may sleep fewer hours. If you wake-up, stay in bed with your eyes closed, bringing your awareness to a gentle breath. Gently, observe the breath, then shift your awareness to your head or third-eye and start silently repeating the mantra, Om Agasthi Shahina (Om Ah-gah-stee Shah-ee-nah). This will allow your body to lower itself back to sleep. It is best not to use your Primordial Sound Mantra as you may feel more invigorated and may cause more sleeplessness. EVENINGS If you prefer, please order warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg and ginger from Room Service to enhance your sleep and ease digestion. FATIGUE AND TIREDNESS In the first few days of Panchakarma treatments, many guests complain of feeling more tired and low energy. This feeling of tiredness is due to long-standing fatigue being eliminated from the system. Listen to your body and use this opportunity to get more rest. CIGERETTES AND COFFEE If you are in the habit of using coffee or cigarettes, this may not be the best time to abruptly stop as this could result in headaches or other discomforts. We want you to be as comfortable as possible during your Panchakarma experience. If you would like to stop coffee or smoking, talk with Dr. Simon about it in your consultation with him. He will guide you on your path to change. DIETARY GUIDELINES DURING AND AFTER PANCHAKARMA In preparation for your Panchakarma treatments, a mild digestive cleansing program was recommended for you. The simplified diet and mild herbal laxative began the purification process and settled the digestive system (agnis). Following the appropriate diet during and after Panchakarma will insure maximum benefit from your experience. FOOD CHOICES DURING PANCHAKARMA During your Panchakarma treatments at the Chopra Center, we recommend that you continue to follow a light, simple diet to allow easy assimilation of food and prevent the formation of ama. Maintain an easy, positive, comfortable attitude during meals as being rigid about food choices is more likely to create discomfort and imbalance than any particular food enjoyed. Follow the Body Intelligence Techniques (BITS) that you will receive on your second day of classes. Please eat lightly, eating to a comfortable, satiated level. The following foods are encouraged during Panchakarma. Use this as a guideline for ordering or planning your meals. Please eat freshly made foods, EAT LIGHTLY. Ø Rice, Oatmeal, pasta and other whole grains. Very limited bread Ø Fresh fish, if necessary at dinner, no heavy meat Ø Soups and dahls (lentil soup) Ø Fresh fruit, eaten alone Ø Vegetables, steamed or lightly sautéed Ø Small amounts of maple syrup or unrefined sugar The following sour or fermented foods are best avoided during panchakarma: Ø Aged Cheese Ø Pickles Ø Vinegar Ø Alcohol Consume less than your usual amount of oils and fats. Use ghee or extra virgin olive oil as the best oils during panchakarma. Evening Meals at La Costa Legends Restaurant We recommend that you have a light meal of rice, dahl and vegetable stir-fry as your evening meal at Legends Restaurant. Please also drink a “Ginger Elixir” before your meal, as you will at lunch. Please let the front desk know each day and what time you would like to have dinner. They will let the dining room manager at Legends know when to expect you. You can also call the dining room yourself, at extension 4500 to request a Chopra Dinner Meal. You may also order off of the menu, please keep your Panchakarma guidelines in mind when ordering. Breakfast: We will provide fruits and oatmeal in the Chopra Center. If you require more for breakfast, please remember to eat after meditation and yoga. A cup of tea and a piece of fruit or granola bar will quiet your stomach in the morning if you need something before meditation or yoga. If you eat breakfast in the restaurant, please eat oatmeal, fruits, granola, egg whites and vegetables. Please don’t eat a heavy breakfast. Use this as an opportunity to be easy on your digestive system. Offsite Restaurant Eating at Jimbos Jimbos Restaurant is located nearby at 1923 Calle Barcelona, Carlsbad, CA 92009, 760-334-7755. Jimbos is a Natural Health Food Store with a full service hot and cold deli. They feature good vegetarian and non-vegetarian foods and have a wonderful selection of organic fruits and foods that you may enjoy. They are open 8am – 9pm daily. Driving directions are: Exit La Costa Resort and turn left on El Camino Real, travel 1.1 miles. Turn Right on Calle Barcelona .4 miles. Jimbos will be on the left side in the Forum Shopping Center. Ginger Tea and Ginger Elixir We will be encouraging you to consume ginger tea and ginger elixirs while here at The Chopra Center. The ginger will help to kindle your digestive fires. Ginger Tea Ginger is known as the universal medicine and can be found in regional cuisines worldwide. Ginger tea has a strong cleansing effect on the body, helping to mobilize toxins and restore balance. Ginger tea benefits the digestive system and can help reduce cravings for sweet and salty items. Ginger helps soothes and cleanse the respiratory tract, making it a valuable tea during cold and flu season. We will be serving the ginger elixir before lunch and recommend that you have it with your dinner as well (available in Legends or Room Service). Ginger tea is available at the tea bar in the Dharma room each day. We recommend that you drink two to three cups of hot ginger tea a day. Make it a habit. Try sweetening your tea with honey. GOING HOME AFTER PANCHAKARMA Take it easy after doing Panchakarma. Your body has gone through a lot of change, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Please remember to do your meditation and continue drinking 2 or 3 cups of ginger tea daily. Bring heavier, harder to digest foods back into your diet in small quantities. Refer back to the list above for recommendation. Use this time to make any dietary changes in your diet to continue the benefits of Panchakarma. By the end of a week following Panchakarma, you should be ready to follow the dosha pacifying diet recommended for you by the medical office or an educator. Seasonal Detoxification We recommend that you continue your detoxification, purification and balancing with a good daily routine, including daily yoga, meditation, exercise and diet. Getting periodic, weekly or monthly massage is also beneficial. We recommend that you return to The Chopra Center twice yearly for a Panchakarma (cleansing) or Rasayana (rejuvenating) program. We also recommend that a monthly internal cleansing program is beneficial to maintaining a healthy and balanced body. The Chopra Essentials “Internal Cleanser” is designed as a 3 day, monthly program that provides the necessary herbs to facilitate a deep result.
Guest guest
Dear Jane Panchakarma is a very evolved process of body cleansing. It is not as simple as it appers. Five day panchakarma course is not possible. Although pancha karma means five cleansing modes, in reality only one is choosen at a time. And, for regular body cleansing (not as a cure, but to keep body fit), the karma that is chosen depends upon the season. To give an example, in winter, cough increases as a natural course. Cough, along with the toxins, can be removed during winter. However, it increases again as a natural tendency (it is required in winter). So, the clinsing is done immediatly after winter, begning of spring. This process is called Vaman. In crude language it means vommiting. However, just as cough is not the phelgm, but a body fluid, so, Vaman is not vommitting, but, removes the toxins from all over the body, bring them to stomach, again using a brilliant natural mechanism, and then with ease, bring it out from mouth. It is not allowed to go through stool, since, then it will cover the mouth of numerous secretary glands hamering their function. This is the reason why Vaman always preceeds any other karma from panchakarma. There after, there is sansarjan kram, the regime to be followed after a 'karma" This is very important. All these things are extremely interconnected, and one can not explain out of context, but I will try. For example, when you take antibiotics. These are not discreminate to friendly and non friendly bacteria. Hence, they kill one and all, that is those which are not resistant. This disturbs the digestive chain. So far so good. But, then the reference is lost. In simple language, if i have n1 bacteria at place 1 n2 at place 2, etc for healthy functioning, body does not know how to restore to these balances. The sansarjan kram or the regime to be followed after a particular karma tries to restore back the reference points of the control system. This process, therefore, is long and evolved. Imagine pancha (meaning five) karma to be done in five days? Just another busyness by fellow bretherns of allopaths. If they can loot why can't we! The practice in India was different. The Vaidya was a knowledgable person, who not nessarily depended for his living on the money given by patients. And, as a part of training, what are his duties was taught, by scriptures. The present day Vaidya's are comming out of factories. And, many of them do not have enough faith in Ayurve. They do Ayurved degrees because they do not get admission to modern medicine. And, they practice herbal alopathy, because it is paying. It is busyness not a profession. I feel, instead of writting such letters, which do not give full knowledge, it is better to write a series of articles explaining the principles. One thing must be clear to everybody. We have to understand the language in which these scriptures are written, so that no one can fool us. I find that most of the translations are far from truth. Many of the so called "ayurvedacharis" do not understand the language. And, in India, because we are using the clutches of English to educate our children, the languages are going to die if preventive measures are not taken immediatly. And then, no one else will have interest in seeing the original texts. They will be totally distorted. So, I suggest to one and all. I will write in english. But, it will be MYunderstanding. If YOU want to understand, learn the language. And spread the gospel, we must give education to our children in vernacular. Even if each one of us wants our child to go to America, let it learn the English Language right from birth, be fluent in it. Yet, education should be in local language. Today I can understand Sanscrut because I can understand Marathi. Very very rich knowledge for the evolution of human body and soul is available in Sanscrut. So, it must survive. Guest guest
Thank you for taking the time to explain in a little more depth the meaning and significance of Panchakarma. I am sure it would be an advantage to speak the language but my life is not moving in that direction at the moment. My raison d'être is presently to care for abandoned creatures and so I am not moving too far away from this goal. My interest in all natural & therapeutic disciplines only lightly touches on Ayruveda, there is far too much in the world which interests me and my eyes are already bigger than my capacity to study more, let alone add further to my already bursting dictionary of a life. My friend has already booked her Panchakarma trip so i shall send her loving thoughts. It is possibly Spring in Nevada anyway. Best Wishes Jane - Akalpita Paranjpe Cc: udhhalika Sunday, February 26, 2006 2:12 PM Re: What to Expect During Your PANCHAKARMA Dear Jane Panchakarma is a very evolved process of body cleansing. Surrender to the experience in each treatment and let yourself be transported into balan ce and bliss. If you are leaving today, please follow the directions below and be aware that your body will continue to de toxify and release. After the basti is eliminated, drink 1 to 2 glasses of v ery warm water or vata pacifying tea every hour until ½ hour before dinner. Pay extra attention to the sensitive areas du ring your gentle massage. Gently, observe the breath, then shift your awareness to your head or third-eye and start silently repeating t he mantra, Om Agasthi Shahina (Om Ah-gah-stee Shah-ee-nah). This feeling of tiredness is due to long-standing fatigue being eliminated from the syst em. Guest guest
" It's conceivable that for a few rare and inspired geniuses, mathematics can reach the point of becoming music or music becoming mathematics. The extraordinary thing about Sanskrit is that it offers direct accessibility by anyone to that elevated plane where the two, mathematics and music, brain and heart, analytical and intuitive, scientific and spiritual become one. This is fertile ground for revelation. Great discoveries occur, weather through mathematics or music or Sanskrit, not by the calculations or manipulations of the human mind, but where the living language is expressed and heard in a state of joy and communion with the natural laws of existence. " Akalpita You brought in the subject of Sanskrit, and gave this author an opportunity to explain to the group, that power of Sanskrit is well understood by even Germans and western scientists. Instead of saying anything further, author would like the group to go to the article by computer language scientists at NASA, stored in group files in folder 'articles' a file termed 'sanskrit.doc' When they were studying languages all over the world for developing language for artificial intelligence, they found that they must make this language just like sanskrit.
