Guest guest
The Mind Body Connection Jon Barron The Mind Body Connection Recently (January 13th), I was interviewed on the Health Trends Show on AdviceRadio.com. The focus of the interview was the connection between the mind and body. The interview reminded me that one of the most important chapters in Lessons from the Miracle Doctors (and probably one of the most ignored) is Chapter 15, The Thought that Kills. (You can download a free copy at www.jonbarron.org.) For years stress and/or depression have been suspected of somehow increasing the risk of contracting numerous infectious diseases. In addition, there is mounting statistical evidence that increased levels of stress and depression also correlate with an increased incidence of cancer. There is even strong statistical evidence linking stress and depression with death itself. In fact, there is now a field of research called psychoneuroimmunology (complete with its own organization and website) that is dedicated to unlocking the connection between our thoughts (i.e. our nervous systems) and our immune systems. Researchers have discovered several key links between these systems: For one, we know that when we are stressed, our bodies produce more adrenaline and cortisol. And while it is true that these hormones help mobilize the body's energy reserves to aid in dealing with the stress, this " service " does not come free of charge. Your body has a finite amount of resources, and when the resources allotted to stress are increased, they must correspondingly be decreased someplace else, and that someplace else is your immune system. As the output of adrenaline and cortisol are increased, the body compensates for the energy expenditure by decreasing the amount of energy available to your immune system. As a result, the number of antibodies in your immune system drop and both the number and strength of lymphocytes in your immune system also diminish. We have also learned that the brain is directly wired to the organs of the immune system (the spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, and bone marrow) and that stress and depression affect their performance. But most interesting of all is the connection between the neuropeptides produced by brain cells and the rest of the body. In much the same way that the immune system uses the interleukins to communicate with itself, the brain uses the hormone-like neuropeptides to communicate with itself and the rest of the body, including the immune system. When we are happy, for example, the brain produces one kind of neuropeptide. The cells of the immune system have specific receptor sites for these " up " chemicals. Once received and locked into the receptor sites, these neuropeptides literally cause the cells of the immune system to strengthen and build. Correspondingly, when we are depressed, we produce a different set of neuropeptides. Immune cells also have specific receptors for these " down " communicators, whose net effect on the immune system is to shut it down. Incidentally, this is by no means a one-way communication. The cells of the brain have receptor sites for the interleukins and interferon produced by the lymphocytes of the immune system. That's right. It turns out that some macrophages and activated lymphocytes actually are capable of producing their own neuropeptides to communicate directly back to the brain in its own language. The communication is bi-directional, constant, and total. This is truly revolutionary information. Basically, through both our nervous systems (direct wiring) and our circulatory systems (hormones and neuropeptides), our minds interact with every organ, system, and cell in our bodies, affecting the performance, functioning, growth, and repair of our: Immune systems Bones Bone marrow Glands Heart (everything from heart rate to the heart tissue itself) The walls of our veins and arteries The functioning of individual cells in the body Even the very structure of our DNA The entire body is literally created and run by the brain -- with equal input back from the organs and cells themselves, again through both the direct wired connections of the nervous system and the neuropeptides and hormones traveling through the circulatory system. The net result is that in addition to what medical researchers have been able to verify and explain, there are a number of " incidents " that hint at so much more. A group of medical researchers in Montreal tracked 222 post heart attack victims, both men and women. The researchers found that those who were depressed (who felt sad, hopeless, and listless) were more likely to die of another heart attack within 18 months of their first heart attack than those who were not -- 10 times more likely, in fact. The January 95 issue of the American Journal of Medicine reported on a study of patients with a history of heart disease that found that those who were depressed were eight times more likely to develop potentially deadly heart rhythms than those who were not depressed. A ten-year study was conducted to follow the mortality rates of people who had experienced stroke. Those who had been diagnosed with either major or minor depression were 3.4 times as likely to have died within the follow-up period. The death rate among depressed patients with few social contacts was especially high -- over 90%! In a study of 194 heart attack patients, those who reported lower amounts of emotional support were nearly 3 times more likely to die within 6 months than those with higher levels of emotional support. And then there is one of my favorite statistics. Have you ever wondered when most people die? Statistically, it turns out that people are more likely to die on Monday morning before going to work than at any other time of the week. There has been much speculation as to why this happens; but in general, most people agree it's something along the lines of: " Most people have heart attacks on Monday morning, because they are stressed that they are heading back to jobs they can't stand after a weekend off. " Stress Stress is your body's response to all of the demands made upon it. Your body responds to all stresses, both positive and negative, by trying to get back to normal. 43% of all adults suffer adverse health effects due to stress. 75-90% of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints or disorders. When a stressor is perceived, the hypothalamus triggers your adrenal glands to release corticosteroids to increase metabolism to provide an immediate increase in energy. Simultaneously, your pituitary releases a hormone called ACTH, which causes your adrenal glands to release epinephrine and norepinephrine, which work to prolong your body's fight-or-flight response. If a stressful situation goes on for too long without any relief, you may feel tired, irritable, depressed, or anxious. You may have trouble sleeping or eating, or you might experience diseases and disorders, such as headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular and kidney diseases, colds, ulcers, asthma, heart attack, and/or stroke. Stress has been linked to all the leading causes of death, including heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis, and suicide. Stress is said to be responsible for more than half of the 550 million workdays lost annually because of absenteeism. Eventually, your body's energy reserves are exhausted; it breaks down. Recent research has confirmed the role of stress in cardiovascular disease, cancer, gastrointestinal, skin, neurologic and emotional disorders, and a host of disorders linked to immune system disturbances, ranging from the common cold and herpes, to arthritis, cancer, and AIDS. Depression Depression works on your body in different ways than stress, but the results are the same. Your body is a product of your thoughts. As we mentioned earlier, the cells of your body have receptor sites for the various neuro-hormones you produce. Your immune cells, to use just one example, have receptor sites for each of those bio-chemicals. When you are happy, you produce a set of neuro-hormones that are picked up by the cells of your immune system. These particular neuro-hormones tell your immune system to jack up -- which it does. In other words, happy thoughts improve your health. However, when you are depressed, the opposite happens. The neuro-hormones your body produces literally shut down your immune system. In effect, negative thoughts can actually kill you. The Pharmaceutical Solution Prozac The major pharmaceutical companies, as usual, have developed a set of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to " manage the symptoms " associated with stress and depression. You might know them as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Effexor and Serzone. Thanks to millions and millions of dollars in promotion, some misguided books that jumped on the bandwagon, and our own marvelous tendency to believe in magic bullets, we have become a " Prozac Nation. " But not without cost. SSRIs cause mania and delusions of grandeur in one out of every 25 children taking the drugs. A tendency to violence has been reported in 1 out of 16 Prozac users. In 70% of all murder/suicides involving women and children, the women were on SSRIs. Conclusion During the interview, I was asked if I thought all illness was created first in the mind. My response is that although on a metaphysical level, you might be able to make that case, in practical terms it doesn’t really apply. For example, it’s hard to ask a baby born with a serious illness, " Why are you making yourself sick? " Yes, there is a direct connection between the mind and the body, and the mind certainly influences the health of the body, but it is by no means the sole arbiter of disease. The connection is not that simple -- and in fact, the body is as likely to influence the mind, as the mind the body. Nonetheless, we are left with the fact that what we think (and how we think) does absolutely (and unequivocally) affect our health. Or as Dr. John Christopher, one of America's foremost naturopaths, was fond of saying, " Most people need a colonic between the ears. " The bottom line is that if you want to make your mind your partner in health, you need to work at it. It takes work to move your mind out of stress and/or depression. The entire Baseline of Health program is obviously beneficial. If you are constipated, it makes you feel " off. " Feel " off " long enough, it leads to depression. If you are undernourished, it leaves you feeling exhausted. Prolonged exhaustion not only leads to depression, it stresses the body. Excess free radicals stress the body, and in a marvelous feedback system that very stress creates a cascade of ever increasing free radicals. Hormonal imbalances stress the body. Exercise creates happy biochemicals that relieve stress. (But of course, too much exercise increases stress.) Etc. Etc. The bottom line is that you're only as strong as your weakest link so you need to do it all to overcome stress and depression. On the other hand, everyone wants the quick fix. So while you're doing the Baseline of Health and rebuilding yourself from the ground up, here are five steps to help you begin the process. Learn to Meditate. If nothing else, just try watching your breath. Sit down. Keep your back straight. Close your eyes and watch your breath. Watch as your breath goes in and your lungs fill. Watch as it goes out and your lungs empty. Don't force; just watch. Learn to Visualize. After you've meditated for a few minutes and calmed down, practice a visualization. See your body as made of healing light. Imagine the light penetrating and healing every cell in your body. If you are sick, focus the light on the diseased area. Practice Affirmation. What we say matters. We all know, for example, someone who uses the word " afraid " all the time. As in: " I'm afraid I won't be able to go tonight. " " I'm afraid I've eaten too much; I'm absolutely stuffed. " " I'm afraid I'm almost out of gas. " etc. Is it any wonder that eventually they're afraid all the time? And then there are the examples that Dr. Bernie Siegal includes in his book Love, Medicine, and Miracles, such as: The man who said " he was always considered spineless " and in the end developed multiple myeloma in his backbone to support his contention. Or the woman who had had a mastectomy who told Dr. Siegel that she " needed to get something off her chest. " It's simple. Instead of being controlled by the things we say, instead of having our health compromised by idle words, we should put words to work for us. Try repeating to yourself over and over with each step you take when you walk, or while you're driving something like: " I'm joy. I'm peace. I'm health. I'm light. " Or make up your own. If so, make it short and rhythmical, so it sort of says itself to a walking cadence. It really does work magic. I once hiked the full length of the John Muir Trail, about 237 miles, silently reciting a similar affirmation every single step of the way. By the end of the trip, I had repeated the affirmation something over 500,000 times -- and I was sailing up and down over 10,000 ft. passes and up and down the 15,000 feet of Mt. Whitney. Take an herbal break. Use an herbal nerve-tonic formulation that contains herbs such as Valerian Root, Kava kava, Passionflower, Hops, Black cohosh, St. John's wort, and Lobelia. Nurtraceuticals such as SAMe, 5-HTP, and L-Theanine can all help reduce stress, depression and anxiety. Guest guest
The narrow definition of the mind does not allow for the all encompassing non material entity that is shown by Krylian photography. Some 2,500 years ago Chaung Tzu wrote " All that have faces , form, voices , colours - all these are mere things . How could one thing and another be far removed from each other. And how could any of them be capable of leading you to what preceded them ?. They are forms and colours - nothing more. But that which creates things has no form and rests where there is no change. If a man can get hold of this and exhaust it fully , then how can things stand in his way. He may rest within the bounds that know no excess , hide within the borders that know no source , may wander where the ten thousand things have their beginning , nourish his breath , unite his virtue and thereby COMMUNICATE with that which creates all things " [23]. Two thousand five hundred years BI [before Internet ] a philosopher understood the natural Internet that connects all things in the world wide web of Nature. Understood that it may be that the virus and bacteria [ which contain genetic material - as do all our cells ] - are as much a form of communication as an " illness " . That in trying to wipe out a virus we may be stabbing ourselves in the back - because the virus is part of Nature - as we are. Life is a dynamic , its only constant is change. Mutation is an ongoing process whose vector is time. To interfere in a process that we do not understand is to invite trouble. We have got that trouble in the form of viral mutations that nourish themselves on Vancomycin. A recent article in the Lancet drew attention to Enterococcus Faecium that mutated in 7 days into a form that relied on Vancomycin as its food. MRSA and forms of TB resist all the drugs we throw at them. TB has been detected in the bones of dinosaurs and it might have occurred to us that an organism that predates the human race has a high survival drive. Vaccines are frozen in time , they do not mutate. Yet out here in the real world the dynamic of relentless mutation is a constant and ongoing fact of life. The 'Flu virus is known to mutate in a matter of days , or at most, weeks - yet it takes 7/9 months to make up a vaccine. Any dangerous pandemic will almost certainly not be covered by the vaccine that is then current. Scarlet Fever was a danger in the 1930's but vanished without a trace - and without the use of a vaccine , for none was ever developed. There is talk of its reappearance now , some 60 years later. Where has it been and what cycle of mutations has it passed through?. To pretend that the picture of Life is not chaotic is absurd. But chaos merely means that we do not understand what we see. To produce 'order' by putting on blinkers , restricting our view to that which we CAN understand will lead us into serious error . Only in the synthesis of material and non material views will a way ahead be found. The positional awareness of the body of a tadpole confirms that a non physical entity develops alongside the physical being. This brings with it a parallel to the immune system [that does not exist in the early stages of embryo development ] - which distinguishes between " Self " and " Not self " - so does developing consciousness distinguish between " Self " and " Not self " . For this to happen there must be an entity that is Self and non physical. An entity that is greater than the sum of the parts The recent cloning of a sheep from an adult cell shows that each cell has the potential to " blueprint " another entity. The development of tadpole to frog is carried out at the hormonal level. When the legs break through the skin all the cells get the same hormonal messenger. But some cells get thicker to prepare for life as an amphibian , whilst others get thinner to allow the leg 'buds' to break through the skin. So two identical cells that join each other can get the same chemical messenger and one will get thinner and the other will get thicker [3] . There is no way that this could be programmed into the DNA. Only by positional awareness , integral to the body , can we account for this development. At a psychological level we are linked into the collective unconscious. Protected only by the insulating layer of the subconscious we nonetheless get some vague feeling of all distress, suffering and joy that is common to humanity as a whole - no human is an island. To shut this out is to develop an inflexible shell that eventually stifles all psychological growth , and results in psychological sclerosis leading to the development of multiple ills and slow demise. The very food that we eat carries 'imprints' of where and how it developed. In the case of animal products we ingest not only the chicken but also its experience of suffering in 'battery cultivation' , not only the beef but its experience of constant milk production during a short and joyless life together with the terror of slaughter when milk production passes its peak. At a physical level we are constantly linked to a ferment of organisms that penetrate our being, use us briefly as a shelter while experimenting with various mutated forms that then set out to communicate whenever we sneeze, make love , or interact in any way with our environment. At an internal level we are a community of cells , each containing its genetic helix , which communicate [a] by minute electrical currents in the nervous system and by chemical hormonal messengers in the blood/lymph , with an interface at the pituitary. The possibility of damaging this organization of communicating parts is immense and infinite. Certainly it has been shown that antibiotics disrupt , that pollution can disrupt , that overcrowding , malnutrition and poverty disrupt [ contributing to the spread of TB ] . Endometriosis [chocolate cysts ] warts , papilloma , moles , and cancers are all instances of body parts losing contact and communication with surrounding tissue. Losing that sense of 'community' that is generated by the flow of biochemical , hormonal and neural messages , bathing the cellular material in an environment of blood [16] , lymph [10] , and neurological transmitters [11] . When this network of communication is interrupted by stress , drugs, [recreational or medical], antibiotics , injections of vaccine , shock or trauma , then cells at the end of the network become confused . They lose their sense of location and wander off - looking for the 'home' of which they feel deprived. Or they proliferate out of control as in warts and growths of all kinds. This happens in external as well as internal society. The human psyche is connected to the Collective Unconscious , which influences us all , but is at the same time influenced by us . Similarly the myriad organisms that hop round the world , inside human globe trotters , reaching even the most cautious 'stick in the mud' individual - are shaped by our genetic makeup. They then change and set forth on their endless round of mutation. The world at large communicates with us in this non verbal physical way , while the Collective Unconscious of the world communicates with us in anon physical way. Cases of close relatives , lovers , twins , etc. , knowing when the other person - thousands of miles away - is ill or dead , are legion [18] . Into this system the facts of clairvoyance , precognition , and thought transference [ such as researched by Dr. Rhine at Duke University ] fit quite comfortably. In the animal world studies of telepathy have been carried out with chimpanzees, yielding encouraging results.[9]. An entity existing , bordering, and interpenetrating the non physical universality , was first proposed by Jung , and probably intersects all living organic matter. It has already been shown that when a field of wheat is harvested the individual plants furthest from the area of harvest are ' aware ' of what is taking place. This same action/reaction cycle is carried out inside the individual body , connecting with the endless flow of the internal 'information' network - which is effectively genetic. When cells communicate we are really saying that the genetic material communicates , as that is the only item complex enough to fill that function . It has been shown that in cell division the energy employed is analogous to gravitational phenomena. All as detailed by A. Dubrov in " Biogravitation & Psychotronics " The behaviour of shoals of fish , flocks of birds , and herds of animals show a collective entity working at a subconscious or unconscious level. Similar behaviour is observable in the human animal when people collectively , behave in a manner that is not " normal " to each individual member. Later when isolated they are puzzled and unable to account for their actions. They say they were ' carried away' . The recent anthropological development of a fragile " ego " or " self " is swept aside and the instinct , built into the genes - acting as a 'local area network' [to use a computer analogy] , effortlessly assumes control and all social constraints are ignored .. It is the condition of this entity that gives rise to health - either good or bad. Stress takes many forms. It may be physical involving semi starvation , overcrowding, bad sanitation and social indifference to suffering. All happened in Medieval Times when life expectation dropped to an average of 40 years . Under extreme pressure of any kind human beings can usually survive for about 40 years , which is genetically long enough to breed and raise the next generation to a state of viability. An inspection of death registers shows that people who have TB , AIDS , the most vicious cancers etc. , will survive to the late 30's/ early 40's. In all cases physical stress is transferred to the non physical self and spread between physical and non physical to ensure survival of the entity. Conversely nervous , psychological stress is " equalized " by transfer to the physical when it " overflows " from physical to non physical. It would appear that the mechanism that operates this " flow control valve " is the pituitary - via the neurohypophysis and the pars distalis [3] . So that when stress is channelled into the physical area , it travels through the neurohypophysis to the pars distalis . which by means of hormonal control creates physical symptoms. When suppression of symptoms drives disease inwards then the reverse occurs and the neural/psychological effects are exhibited by the body - via the neurohypophysis. All of this has a dramatic effect on the immune system [24]. To return to the internal/external relationship of all things - where we are surrounded by the external physical nature , but internally in contact with the non material Collective Unconscious/Life Force [probably of genetic origin ] and ourselves act as an interface between the two. Fear and apprehension are almost universally felt in the viscera " Gut feeling " is older than science. It has been speculated that there is a secondary brain located in that area. Certainly instinctual reactions that are as old as the DNA manifest themselves via this outlet. It may be considered due to a possible relationship to the dinosaurs , some of whom had two brains , one in the head and one further down the body. The art of genetic splicing , or the technology of recombinant ligation [17] runs into problems when the splice is rejected for no apparent reason. It may be desirable from the human point of view , but non viable in the overall view of total genetic possibility. The genes must have a view of eternity that is beyond human comprehension - having existed for millions of years. They will accept or reject human interference as it works to their own best advantage. As a race it has taken us thousands of years to accept that Earth is not the centre of the universe - now perhaps we have to accept that humanity is a suit of clothing that the genes have put on for a possibly limited period. Let us hope that we do not ruin the suit so that they have to send it to the cleaners. The Human Genome Project [5] is already outdated by the discovery that at least some genetic information is [ See prions and BSE research ] " written " and " stored " at molecular and sub-molecular levels. A further instance of the way in which science continually peels away one layer to reveal another - showing that without understanding knowledge is a useless rag bag. Our society and our individual bodies reflect one another and are embedded in the province of nature. So if we exploit and ruin Nature we exploit and ruin ourselves. The unravelling of the Human Genome Project is probably irrelevant in the sense that each individual is a unique and evolving entity that meets and solves the problems of its individual development - until it meets a problem that it cannot solve and lays down its share of the Life Force. A concept that is developed in " Cellular Organization in a Biotic Entity " [7] . Apoptosis [19] or cell suicide is currently under investigation in oncology , with the idea that it may be possible to get a tumour to commit suicide and abort itself . One can imagine this as a subject of military research - can we kill our enemies this way ? .. But as we are all part of Nature and Humanity - who are our enemies ?. What it also shows is that all the cells of the body are in communication ,via the lymph , blood , ductless glands , and the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. This view is supported by a tradition stretching back to the early 1900's. Dr. Compton Burnett [8] and Vithoulkas [21] considered that cells that were in close proximity to each other in early embryo development , retain an affinity , or connective awareness of each other - regardless of their position in the finally completed body. Finally , there can be little doubt that Vitality [or Life Force ] exists , is a logical structure and subject to various laws , or operational rules which were compiled in 1989 [6] . They are :- OPERATIONAL LAWS OF VITALITY. [1] THE DIRECTION OF DISEASE IS IN AND UP . THE DIRECTION OF CURE IS DOWN AND OUT. [2] BY TRACING THE PATH OF DISEASE FROM THE EXTERIOR TO THE INTERIOR - FROM BELOW UPWARDS . THE LATENT GENETIC CLASS IS REVEALED. [3] THE VITALITY IS THE IMMUNOLOGICAL SYSTEM PLUS 'X' , AND ANYTHING THAT WEAKENS THE VITALITY TENDS TO DESTROY THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. [4] THE BODY HAS A LIMITED RESPONSE TO ANY INFECTION. WHEN THAT LIMIT IS REACHED NO FURTHER DAMAGE WILL BE DONE AND THE INVADER WILL DEFEND THE BODY AGAINST FURTHER INVASION. [5] IF SOME DIRECT INTERVENTION IS MADE , BY DRUGS , THEN THE BODY REGAINS ITS VULNERABILITY AND REINFECTION WILL PROGRESSIVELY DAMAGE THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. [6] IF THE VITALITY IS PUT IN WORKING ORDER IT WILL THEN PUT ITS OWN HOUSE [ie THE BODY ] IN ORDER , ELIMINATING UNWANTED GROWTHS AND ELEMENTS OF DISEASE. [7] A HEALTHY VITALITY WILL EASILY CONTROL ONE , OR POSSIBLY TWO CLASSES OF HEREDITARY ILLS. IF ATTACKED BY A THIRD CLASS , OR SUBJECTED TO TRAUMA , THE OUTERMOST OR SURFACE PRESENTATION WILL BE THAT CLASS MOST DANGEROUS TO THE BODY AND ITS PROCESS'S. SUPPRESSION OR THE INWARD DRIVING OF SYMPTOMS WILL LEAD TO A SUCCESSION OF DISORDERS - OR A LAPSE INTO INCURABLE CHRONIC CONDITIONS - LEADING TO A SHORTER LIFE EXPECTANCY. [8] THE VITALITY ACTS AS A HARMONIZER OR INTEGRATOR. ACCEPTING SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS WITH ORGANISMS THAT CONFER BENEFIT . DOMESTICATING THREATENING ORGANISMS AND DESTROYING LETHAL ORGANISMS. ANY THREAT TO THIS HARD WON BALANCE IS A THREAT TO LIFE. [9] THE VITALITY ACTS ON A " CONSERVATION OF ENERGY " PRINCIPLE . AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT PART OF ITS ENERGY WILL BE HOLDING HEREDITARY ILLS BELOW THE SURFACE AND OUT OF CONSCIOUS AWARENESS. SPARE ENERGY IS FREE FOR JOY OF LIVING. SUPPRESSED SYMPTOMS SOAK UP FREE ENERGY - DEVITALIZE THE BODY AND ALLOW HEREDITARY ILLS TO VENT ON THE SURFACE. THUS DISCHARGES AND ERUPTIONS SHOULD BE TREATED WITH CAUTION , AS THEY ARE RELIEVING INTERNAL PROBLEMS. [10] INDIVIDUAL CASES SHOULD GIVE WEIGHT TO INSTINCTUAL CONDUCT BY THE PATIENT - AS INSTINCT HAS MILLIONS OF YEARS OF EXPERIENCE TO DRAW ON . AS AGAINST THE SHORT EXPERIENCE SPAN OF THE INTELLECT. [11] A REFUSAL TO REALIZE PSYCHOLOGICAL POTENTIAL CREATES AN INTERNAL VACUUM . THIS CAN LEAD TO ADDICTIONS OF ALL KINDS , AS ATTEMPTS ARE MADE TO FILL THE PSYCHOLOGICAL VOID WITH MATERIAL SUBSTANCES [DRUGS , ALCOHOL , COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOUR ETC.] Operational instances of the above are the treatment of inflammation [anywhere in the body] by antibiotics - or the over vaccination of young children, particularly below the age of two. This has led to a great increase - of almost epidemic proportions - of asthma , eczema and allergies. May update -- Scientist Juliaan Davies of the Univ of B.C. says " Microbes are part of an enormous community ; the ecology of microbes. We are not talking about a few microbes on you, me or in a hospital. We are talking about all the microbes in the environment. they are a community. THEY TALK TO EACH OTHER. They exchange genes , and when one of the population needs help from other microbes theey can get it. If they need genes from the environment that will give resistance to a particular class of antibiotic - they can do it by a mechanism of genetic- exchange. Microbes have more promiscuous ways of taking care of gene exchange than we can possibly imagine and they are very good at it. " At last science is accepting the intercommunity of genetic exchange - they have yet to appreciate the implications of this happening inside the human body!!!. Guest guest
............ and MRSA and TB still respond to sunlight, the former in wounds responds to silver and charcoal dressings - have they not produced a sunlight pill yet LOL? Endometriosis disappears when the diet is changed and gluten is eliminated. Why do they all have to make everything so very complex? Guest guest
Thank you for this exhaustive and informative narrative James. Kirilian photography opens questions to go further deep down at Consciousness level- bio plasma. The world presents a spectacle that is really marvellous and our Mind projects this universe as hologram-! What an incredible mechanism devised and planted by the Supreme - The Divine in us, that plays each and every role- acts on universal stage as doer of all acts done, all thoughts conceived and the force behind each and everything manifested. The Divine playing each and every role that make human being strut and dance on the stage for a while through aeons- and yet that ' Spark ' that 'Elemental Force' remains Elusive. I am of the opinion that an objective study and scientific research carried out in domain of Consciusness shall open up new vistas and sure cures and provide pannecia pressed into the hands of humanity that shall wipe away, like a torrential current, all the cobwebs and deceptions that go on in the name of medicines. Guest guest
This poses a conundrum in my mind, so my question is - is a man with TB therefore more intelligent than a man without TB? I can't really perceive the connection between the survival of a disease and the intelligence of man. Guest guest
This is a tremendous post Dr James. In genetic engineering the question has already surfaced; what BEFORE the DNA? There is a void, a void full of possibilities. We read about this in our Upanishads which holds EVERYTHING to be sacred, even the imperfections. ZEN philosophy too asks us to love the imperfections. Nothing is unnecessary in this interlinked web of life and the world. Even as they talk about mapping the gene what few people know is that only about 5% has been mapped, which is the " good DNA " , the rest is " junk " . Now what could this junk be? It is " work-in-progress " that is always at a readiness to change. It could also hold the key to past experiences and future actions. So our genetic engineers who are concentrating on the " good " 5% will be creating mayhem shortly.
