The period once euphemistically called the Age of the Miracle Drug is now dead. And the indiscriminate use of antibiotics is leading us to one of the most frightening eras in recent memory. That is, the return of infectious diseases for which there is no effective treatment. Two decades following the introduction of antibiotics, the medical community began to see a disturbing trend. Bacterial infections that were once treatable no longer responded to antibiotics. Penicillin is effective today against only 10 percent of the strains of Staphylococcus aureus that it used to eradicate easily. Those that did respond often required five to ten times the dose of the drug that previously was effective. One example

of this is the resistant strains of gonorrhea that developed as a result of the antibiotics that were used to treat it." Michael Traub, N.D. "For many of us it comes as as surprise to learn that bacteria are highly intelligent and adaptable. We have been taught from birth that they are pretty dumb and that, through the use of antibiotics, we are winning a war against them, a war that will end all disease. In fact the opposite is true. Bacteria show behavior that indicate intelligence and they are acting together throughout the world to counter the antibiotics we have invented to kill them off. Bacteria, it turns out, are inextricably intertwined with the formation of the human species and the health of the Earth. One to two pounds of our body weight are bacteria and over eons we have developed a crucial and important symbiosis with them. By creating antibiotics we have introduced non-biodegradable antibacterial substances into the ecosystem at the rate (now) of 40 million pounds a year. To survive, for our species to survive, bacteria had to evolve and they have at a rate never before seen on Earth. In this process they have become more intractable and virulent than ever before. But more than this, bacteria previously benign have been learning how to become virulent. We have upset the bacterial balance of nature to a frightening degree. Over the next decade our antibacterial arsenal will begin to fail at an ever increasing rate. Epidemiologists now warn of epidemic diseases that are not treatable by modern means. But it turns out that herbal medicines, those most ancient of human helpers, are effective against antibiotic resistant bacteria for they are much more complex than antibiotics and bacteria cannot

develop resistance to them. In this book I explore the ecological basis of bacterial resistance, some of what we can do to prevent it, and the top fifteen herbs to use as antibiotic substitutes for treating the most intractable resistant diseases. By learing to understand bacteria as a crucial life form on Earth and how to live in balance with them instead of destroy them, ecological healing - a healing that takes into account our place in the circle of life - can begin." I love homeopathy - it just has so much going for it - and given the option I would go that way every time. But I am a registered nurse. I give out anti-biotics everyday. I see people everyday with diarrhoea (an immediate side-effect). And each week I see people who do not drink enough water get cured of their urinary tract infections, people who do not breathe enough or drink enough get rid of chest infections, and people who do not move enough or drink enough get rid of wound infections. My colleague believes in anti-biotics and he presses every doctor at every possibility to prescribe anti-biotics and I do observe that all these elderly people get better. If the relatives request "no anti-biotics" for their mothers or fathers then we know it is the end for that person. And it usually is.

Sometimes I am able to persuade the GPs to cease all medications if an elder is sick or appears to be dying and the impact this has is that often they improve and live with a much quality of life.

I have to respect the choice of my patients and their relatives (even sometimes their GPs) and this helps my flexibility to know there are many ways to heal people - not only the one we might approve.

Do you not feel that the cure is also in the attitude and trust of the patient and may have nothing whatsoever to do with what they are given in the way of medication?

Sorry guys I like to write from my personal experience and not always from that of other people, I trust what I see especially when I can relate it to what I know. I am also aware that university students these days have to continuously quote "references" and "other sources" they are virtually not ever able to express their own ideas and views and are not expected to have experience on which they can draw. To me - this is a killer.
