The emotional tie is natural, the knowledge tie is because animals have helped mankind immensely. They have helped him understand nature, they have helped in understanding hunting methods, they have helped in inculcating survival techniques, they have helped us with agriculture and provided food during lean seasons. They have also protected us as pets and cared for our emotional needs when lonely. There are instances of pets taking on illnesses and other threats upon themselves to save us. There are reports of dolphins aiding in cure and whales connecting to people. It is a pity we are becoming increasingly insensitive to them and their needs. The human population of the world is increasing thus shrinking forest area and grazing lands. The animals are being forced out of their habitats only to be killed. If in Australia the kangaroo is at risk, in India the national animal Tiger is almost wiped out by poaching. I am at a loss to think of any solution to this problem. If you raise such issues people react with, " Think of human issues first, the animals can come later. " Very few realise that the future of both is interlinked. Nowadays we love our animals on TV channels and not when we confront them in real life. Like many I know, I too am waiting for the human population to come down. It sounds cruel but that is the only solution.
