Hi Moira,

I'm a massage therapist in the US. I've never used EOs to assist someone with

manic depression, but I have a good book ;-) According to Sylla Sheppard-Hanger

the oils that are beneficial to this

condition are lavenders & geraniums (listed in the Emotional/Mental Index). For

mood swings, she recommends benzoin, bergamot, clary sage, fennel, frankincense,

geranium, jasmine, rosewood & lavender

(listed in the Clinical Index).

Many years ago, I was diagnosed with this condition. After trying a huge number

of assorted psychotropic medications, the MDs finally settled on lithium, which

they said I could expect to be on for the

rest of my life. During the manic phases, I would just about be bouncing off

the walls...the depression reminded me of walking around wearing one of those

lead vests the dentists use on you when they

x-ray your teeth. I went off the medication after a couple of years, and after

a few ups and downs, balanced out and haven't taken any meds for about 20 years

now. This, of course, is just me....I

would never recommend that anyone discontinue medications that have been

prescribed by their doctor. I was in my late teens and early 20s when all this

happened, and my suspicion is that it was simply a

matter of 'growing out of it'....possibly a hormonal imbalance.

Bipolar disorder can be a debilitating illness, and I wish I had had someone

doing massage on me when I was experiencing these intense mood swings....getting

back in touch with the body can be a powerful

thing.

Good luck,

Sandy Horner, RMT

Wisconsin

Hi , I just caught interest as my sister who was also diagnosed with being a

manic depressive has also been off medication for a few years now. She has

found a strength within herself doing Reiki and has also been in contact

with people in a spiritual group. She has met people that have said if only

they would have known her while in her manic rage and they possibly could

have helped her calm the state down by just talking to her rather than go

through the entire straight jacket and drug scene. She was told this was the

release of the 'Kundalini' and with some guidance it would have been easier

on her.

This just makes me curious to wonder how many people are locked up and

drugged and it is beyond their control. How sad....

Regards Janice
