Guest guest
Can anyone tell me what oils would be good to use in a massage for someone who has been diagnosed as a manic depressive? And would the use of Vitamin B complex vitamins and Kaliphos tissue salts help the condition at all? This person is also quite dependant on analgesics and self medicates excessively. Thanks Moira South Africa

I dont know anything about aromatherapy (thats why I signed to the list ..to learn) but I had an uncle who was schizophrenic and he also was dependant on analgesics. He actually died of an asprin overdose. Anyway, it seemed to me that his use of asprin was related to trying to control his environment. Perhaps if this person had some routine thing they did daily, something they enjoyed doing and would do it even when they were on the down swing (self massage perhaps?) that it would help give them a sense of control. Perhaps there is an essential oil that would support this idea? Blessings to your client. I do hope he/she will be able to find some relief. Guest guest
Hi Suzette Thanks for the input. The person concerned is a 69 year old woman in an old age home. There are further complications in that she has emphysema. She has a fixation with pills and drugs and has been self-medicating all her life. She will almost always take pain tablets " in case she gets a headache " . This person is at the moment on anti-psychotic drugs and has been unable to self-medicate with the pain tablets as the hospital will not allow her to take anything that has not been prescribed by the doctor. However she will soon be released from hospital where she will again have access to self-medication, I thought perhaps the B complex vitamins, tissue salts and maybe some magnesium, zinc and calcium coupled with perhaps a weekly aromatherapy massage may help. She is having problems sleeping and is not reacting well to the latest anti-psychotic drug. Moira S.A. She seems to have so many troubles. I am sure they pile up for her If she is willing a weekly massage would be wonderful for her. This is rather simple..but to help her sleep she might try some lavender and ylang ylang on her pillow case..or on a hanky on her pillow. This is a very nice " childrens remedy " but its one that really seems to work. I would try 10 parts lavender to 1 part ylang ylang. The ylang ylang will take the camphorous edge off the lavender. I know for my uncle the best thing we could ever do for him was to simply care. I some times think that the mentally ill (or severly depressed) have a deep karmic need for self punishment. The down side is that these people are so difficult for most of us that the " punishment " is from the outside too. Im just thinking out loud.. Your client sounds higher functioning than my uncle was. Perhaps in addition to a weekly massage she would benefit from yoga and or meditation. I would even suggest chanting while she practices as she can use the public vocal time to alleviate some of her internal frustrations. I know *I* like to get out my frustrations vocally anyway and chanting beats yelling I know this isnt really much help. Im just a soap maker! But I cant help but be moved.
