Guest guest
Hello All- There is a fabulous, but often unknown essential oil by the name of Spikenard. It is referenced several times in the Bible, being referred to in the Bible as " nard " , and was not only costly, but a highly coveted substance. Tisserand calls Spikenard " one of the most fascinating and obscure essential oils. " The following is paraphrased from 375 Essential Oils & Hydrosols by Jeanne Rose, North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, CA 1999: Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi)- a tender and aromatic herb with a pungent rhizomatous root. Greenish-brown in color, the scent of Spikenard is earthy, leathery and sweet. Roughly 93% Sesquiterpenes, up to 20% Valcranone and other minor constituents. Spikenard is both emotionally and physically calming as well as being a powerful antifungal. It is indicated for psoriasis, insufficient ovarian function, athlete's foot, fungal infections, and emotionally for deep sadness. It can be used in cosmetic products, it is a very powerful oil for grounding and emotional needs. It is also referred to as a " woman's " oil. Jeanne Rose is actually the person who introduced me to this wonderful oil - and it is an oil I can never be without. My favorite way to blend this oil is very simply - I add two drops of Rose oil to 1/2 ounce of Spikenard and from that make body oil and perfume. If I'm frazzled and need to ground, one inhalation directly from the bottle immediately puts me in a much more calm state of mind. If I'm emotionally upset I place a few drops of the blend on a handkerchief and put it underneath my pillowcase. I've even scented some of my stationary with the scent! I hope this post generates your curiosity to at least want to smell this ancient aroma! Aromatic regards, Kimberly

Guest guest
Kimberly, I find Spikenard interesting too, but it is one of the only oils I cannot tolerate. The aroma makes me ill. However, I love other earthy aromas--vetiver as an example. And I've never had much luck using it creatively in blends. Have others used it successfully?
