Guest guest
Hello! I've been a member of this list for a while but have been sort of lurking for a couple of weeks, and I think it's time I introduced myself. I live on an island off the coast of Washington State near Canada, and I have a small vibrational healing practice that includes Reiki, flower essences, and hopefully soon aromatherapy. So far I've just taken a beginning basic course in aromatherapy from Valerie Cooksley, but I am hoping to begin a formal professional course with the Institute of Dynamic Aromatherapy in Seattle very soon. Now for my question.......I've just attended a " seminar " in contact reflex analysis and aromatherapy by a representative of the Young Living Essential Oil company. Everything I've ever read about essential oils, and also in my beginning aromatherapy course with Valerie, it was emphasized that most of the oils can be very dangerous if applied directly to the skin without a carrier oil. I know that in some cases certain oils can be applied neat in a small area, like lavendar or tea tree or rose. Yet that was the preferred method of application given by the person doing this seminar for all of the oils. I asked about using a carrier, but she said that a carrier is only used over the top of the essential if it causes burning. She also said that using water after the use of the essential oil will drive the essential oil into the skin, and she also recommended that. Since I've been lurking for a bit, I've come to respect the knowledge of this group, so I'm hoping that you might be willing to give an opinion. Thanks very much, Susan Kelsey -{-{@
Guest guest
Greeting Susan, Your practice sounds wonderful. Re your question about essential oils being used neat. In all the books I've read and the courses I've attended (now a professional) I would never ever use essential oils neat apart from the ones you have suggested, Lavender, Tea Tree and Rose (expensive!!) where have they got this from that you can use them neat? VERY DANGEROUS. These essences are the pure oils from the plants and contain all sorts of chemicals that can be harmful to the skin if applied in this manner. Carry on the way you are being taught and use carrier oils. I'm still getting it wrong sometimes when I have a bath and put too much of peppermint or grapefruit in and come out with a prickly rash! Happy learning its a wonderful journey and I'm still learning too. Good Luck with your practice. Keep smiling karen
Guest guest
Hi I just thought I would pass on that what I have heard about Young Living has been anything but favorable, thru an aromatherapy newsgroup I am in. No-one has much to say about them (in a good way!) Check out this web site which explains the concerns www.fragrant.demon.co.uk I don't have any personal experience with the company just going on what others say. As for it being safe to use ALL oils undiluted that is total rubbish. Lav and tea tree can be, as you said but as for the others I would recommend a carrier oil. Guest guest
Hi Susan, Young Living Oils uses some methods that are highly questionable as far as safety is concerned. There has been considerable controversy about this. If you are interested in the details, check out their website. Personally, I would not use neat oils on the skin. Good luck with your courses, Allana
Guest guest
Hi, I agree that it's unwise to use EO's neat, except for Lavandula angustifolia. I don't even recommend using Tea Tree neat but I do on occasion. Amy > As for it being safe to use ALL oils undiluted that is total rubbish.
