Hello all!

I have a question. I love the smell of Jasmine, but Jasmine EO is SOOOO

expensive. The Jasmine has just bloomed here in SC and will only be in

bloom for a few more days. What is the best way to get the EO out of the

plants? I know it is usually distillation, but I don't have a still. Any

suggestion?

Hi Christine and List...

The reason Jasmine is so expensive, is two fold....

First, the yield of the flowers is very low...(although the flowers can

produce their essential oil fro up to 24 hours after picking....)

Second....the heat of distillation will destroy what makes jasmine

jasmine...

As far as I know...there isn't any such thing as Jasmine essential oil...

Jasmine comes as an absolute...that is...solvent extracted.....(there's an

older method involving animal fat called enfleurage that isn't around much

any more and even that used a solvent, ethanol usually, in the final

stages to extract the essential...)

There's several types around, and some variance with repect to where the

jasmine type is produced....

You may also run across a concrete, pommade or wax....these being various

stages or parts of the extraction process....all are lovely...

And yes....jasmine is *always* expensive (reason 1 above), but fortunately

it's one of those that takes only a little to do a lot...

Absolutely my favorite absolute....!
