I remember being quite surprised when I first smelt it because it smells of dry ginger rather than the fresh root. Physically, I find it useful for all 'hurts' - bumps and bruises, sore joints, cramping muscles. And like all the spice oils, for digestion. Non-physically, I use it for people who need grounding - it relates to the base chakra. It is also used in aphrodisiac mixtures and some writers say it attracts love, so it's sacral chakra too.
