I'm confused! Our aromatherapist teacher taught us never to take EOs

internally, only for gargle.

What are YL oils, something different to normal EOs?

Help, anybody!

Dear Melanie, I have to apologize for even bringing any of this up.

In the field of Aromatherapy there are differing opinions. Especially

here in the US. In Europe it is more common to have oils prescribed

internally. Here we stick pretty much to external use only. Either

way, the oils are going to be metabolized. If they are good oils,

great. If they aren't - it's just like anything else we ingest. I

totally agree with Sharron - who as an Aromatherapist with years of

training says - we have to be very mindful of the oils we are using

and how we are using them and take full responsibility for that. The

only thing that concerns me a little is that here in the US the FDA

allows the words " pure " " organic " to be put on oils that may well be

adulterated. It's a very touchy topic, and because I am not at

learned I will defer to the more educated on this panel. But I am

learning - and it's great!!!! Thank you for this opportunity to

learn.

Happy Holidays,

Lynn

Yes Melanie, your teacher was right...Internal ingestion of oils is a

very contraversial subject and it is best to be on the safe side and not

use oils internally unless you know EXACTLY what you are

doing...Essential oils work extremely well through inhalation and

application and it is not necessary to use them internally, in fact,

most aromatherapists will not advocate their internal use, so no, it is

better not to take them internally :)

YL is a multi-level marketing company that sells essential oils, it is

their brand name...YL being short for Young Living...I have not heard

good things about this company and from what I read from Lynn's post

they sell mostly Food Grade oils so that would not do you much good for

aromatherapy purposes...To have proper results one should use ONLY 100%

Pure Essential Oils that have not been adulterated or Diluted unless it

is specifically for a blend and then the proper dilution would be 100%

PUre oil diluted in a carrier oil, but this should say on the bottle if

it is 100% Pure Oil or a blend...I personally use different colors for

the labels to signify also that one is a blend and the other is the Pure

oil so that people can see which ones they will need to dilute in

carrier oil themselves and which ones are already done for them...I also

write on the labels so that people know what they are buying...But just

because it says 100% Pure Essential Oil doesn't mean that everyone you

buy from is being honest, some people may be giving you Food Grade and

just saying it is 100%Pure, so know who you are dealing with before you

buy...always buy from a trusted source

hope that helps

Hi Melanie....

YL (Young Living) oils...are just that...essential oils...

If they're *something* else....than they *aren't* EO's....

There is a lot of controversy concerning the internal use of EO's......

It is true that in Europe....in France especially...EO's are prescribed

for internal use by some physicians.....

The comment by the Young Living person that all of their EO's are food

grade (?) is misleading at best.....

For example, Wild Tansy (Tanacetum vulgaris) is not now, nor has it ever

been a " food grade " EO.....whether it comes from Idaho or wherever.....

it *is* an EO that could cause problems for anyone who might take it

internally....

The same with many commeon EO's, and with many uncommon EO's....

Any kind of use of *any* EO internally should only be done under the

supervision of a *trained* aromatherapist......or in the US, under the

prescription of a qualified MD.....

There is no legal reason in the United States why you cannot take EO's

internally yourself......

But if you chose to do so, please learn as much about the EO as much as

possible.....utilize a variety of sources for your information....

The Great part is.....with the many EO's (and their varieties of them) you

have a lifetime of knowledge seeking ahead.....

Regards.....

Dear Sharon and Melanie,

I have been following this thread about taking eo's internally and I

agree with Sharon about not taking eos internally. I also am posting the

following web site information because Graham Sorenson has detailed

information on Gary Young and Young Living which Melanie should read. This

information should allow Melanie to make better decisions concerning YL eos.

The web site url is: http://www.fragrant.demon.co.uk and is open to anyone

who wishes to read up on YL. Graham also hosts web pages on aromatherapy

information for anyone interested.

This is not an advertisement for Graham's business but to be used to

educate others who wish to learn about YL.

Sharon, I do agree with you that eos should be 100 % pure and that

you should be aware of the person that you are buying from. I have been in

business for over 10 years and I have seen all types and qualities of

essential oils represented by many different companies. When I teach

classes I bring several different types of the same eo to show students the

difference in quality between them. At present I have 6 different lavenders

from different dealers and parts of the world. Each smells different and

each has a different function. There are only 2 of these 6 that I will use

in my formulas. The rest of these lavenders are for show and smell.

Good Luck in your search Melanie. Remember the journey of the 1,000

miles begins with the first step and once you have the tools, are you

willing to take that first step?

Have a wonderful holiday season to all.

One thing I like about this list is that everyone has the choice to buy

whichever EO's work for them. It appears that this list is getting into

bashing producers of EO's. You find that which you seek - dirt can be

dug up and posted on anyone you choose. But what does this do but take

up space and cause problems for all concerned. I use what works -

whether it be YL, Tisserand, or whatever. The choice is still mine. I

use experiential knowledge - that is I experience then make my own

choices. Not all oils work for everybody. I have used EO's for over 15

years. I am afraid I have come across little harsh here - the reason

being is I have been attacked for my choices of oils on other lists and

it hurts my heart to see this list going down the same road.

Thanks Linda for voicing my concerns about what I'm seeing and

hearing. I made a mistake and it's like pandora's box. I never meant

any of this. All I shared was what I do - sometimes. I'm looking

forward to the loving, supportive threads to resume.

Blessings of the Season to all, Lynn
