Guest guest
In reference to your insomnia, Eva, here are the things that worked for me - a few drops of Roman Chamomile in base oil, rubbed in n & sh or to soles of feet. Not everyone likes the smell of Cham. though, but I think Cham. & Lavender makes a lovely mix. For nightly baths, I mix Bergamot with Cham. or Marjoram, in coarse sea salts, available from Holland & Barrett in England. The salts make me feel really cleansed and rested. After a good few months use, I feel as if Chamomile's effect is wearing off too. Do people feel this happens after a while? I might turn to Sandalwood for a bit. Is this a good choice of oil for insomnia? Would appreciate any views, please. Stacey, thanks for your little reply! From Melanie

Dear Gentlepeople: Sorry to be such a stranger on this list lately but .... " tis the season " , you know? Stacey, Melanie and all others who have written about such and such an oil seeming to loose effectiveness after regular use, there are a few reasons for this to happen (and I'm going to TRY to make this quick and simple). 1. Placebo effect. This exemplifies what is " wrong " with placebos.... after awhile, the body rules vs. the mind ruling over the body. Precisely what you all have been saying is *highly* typical of the " placebo effect " whether any of us like it or not. Now .... I am NOT saying *this* is " the cause " . You all asked for *possibilities* and I am trying to provide an unbiased presentation of the *facts*. 2. Ineffective or poor quality or impure oils. (please don't jump on me just yet!) The oils any of you are using may be *perfect* specimens when you *get* them ... but ... after frequent use, exposure to air, light, changes in temperatures, ***AIR SPACE*** in the bottle (the *bigest of the big culprits in *my* experience) can really wreak havoc in the oils quality... dependent on what it is, especially! There are *lots* of ways of getting around this. 3. OVER USE. Moderation is the key to all things! We are beings of homeostasis and adaptation... just as are *all* things in the natural world / plant and animal. Our bodies (as well as micro-organisms .. ex. as seen with antibiotic overuse and abuse) adapts!!!!! This is why it is IMPERATIVE to have a *wide variety* (but for most of you, small amounts) of essential oils and *vary* any blends / eo's you use. A good rule of thumb is to never use any blend (or any particular eo) on a daily basis, (no matter what the reason) for more than 3 weeks. It is then time to change to something else, or better yet .... TAKE A BREAK for a week, from any and allllll essential oils. Moderation. Variety. Period. If anyone needs assistance in finding suppliers (and I don't just mean myself) who make it possible to purchase VERY small amounts of a wide variety of essential oils, please contact me. I will give you a list of several!!! 4. Innappropriate use or inappropriate or " non-synergestic " use of essential oils. The wrong oil for the problem you are trying to help. There may be more but those are just off the top of my head. Now .... for the insomnia ... Here are some choices of oils that I reach for myself or offer to my clients. #1 blend: Roman chamomile, Lavender, Sweet marjoram and a touch of geranium or sandalwood. #2: Tangerine, lavender ... a touch of patchouli if you like #3: Geranium, Vetiver or Patchouli or valerian root, clary sage, frankincense 1 and 2 are appropriate for *most* people (in that it won't cause troubles for *most* people ... and are relatively safe in SMALL, highly diluted form, for children I MUSTS add something however ...... AT is NOT the end all for insomnia. It is IMPERITIVE to get to the ROOT CAUSE of insomnia. It can be a serious problem *and* a symptom of somethings that are quite serious .... others that are easily rectified with a good AT practioner or health care provider. I remember seeing someone post about a child who sleeps from 10pm to 8 am and " only takes one 1 hour nap " during the day. I'm sorry ... but this is NORMAL for many children of the age mentioned. Some parents should be so lucky!!! I would *not* see, by the info provided by the poster, that this would be an indication to treat this child with AT or anything else for that matter... unless the child's health was affected, or ... well, lots of other things I just can't get into at present. In this high tech world with all kinds of " action " going on all around us, it is easy for *any* of us to suffer from sensory overload.... looking at a quiet, soothing environment, looking at the *foods* and beverages the child is consumming, the activities the child is doing, and so much more are the *first and foremost things* that should be delved into. My professional opinion. It may be the poster has checked into all of these things and more .... but .... if like most poeople *I* know that come to me for help like this, chances are great that they have not. (Please know I'm not pointing an accusing finger here ... just making *general* comments based on my own professional experience in the field). Guest guest
In a message dated 12/10/99 1:46:33 PM US Mountain Standard Time, changes writes: << #2: Tangerine, lavender ... a touch of patchouli if you like >> Susan, This blend sounded devine, so I blended it and used last night when I awoke at my usual times! 12:30pm and 3:35 pm and it worked great! I am not a lover of Patchouli but blended with the Tangerine and Lavender it was a wonderful scent. I really appreciate all your good sound advise that you so willingly share with us on the list! Thank you for this lovely Christmas gift! Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year 2000 Dianna / Inner Sanctuary of Healing
