Dear J., there is nothing like real musk. Nowadays, it's a

total no-no. The only way to get it is by killing the

Himalayan deer (an endangered species) and cutting the musk

sac off its abdomen. Anyone concerned about cruelty to

animals will definitely avoid it. Only once have I

encountered genuine musk. About 12 years ago in an Indian

sari store I found incense sticks made with natural musk.

I don't know how it was manufactured and exported, because

it became illegal sometime around then. That was surely

the last gasp of it. But I can tell you that the real

thing smells heavenly.

That leaves synthetic musk. The Attar Bazaar provides 100%

natural oils, with the exception of musk, of course. Their

synthetic musk fragrance oils are pretty good. My favorite

is called Pearl Musk. It has the nearest approach to

original plain musk, without the scents added as

embellishments to their other musk fragrances.

You didn't mention if your citrusy-woody-spicy blend

(sounds excellent! Send me some when you get it done) was

meant for aromatherapy or just fragrance. If the latter,

then probably Pearl Musk from Attar Bazaar would work well

as a base or middle note. It has great longevity. One

drop when mingled with your body's natural chemistry will

persist for days. Its full fragrance doesn't come out

until after it's well absorbed into the skin and warmed up.

As for natural essential oils needed for a base or middle

note, you could not go wrong with Sandalwood. It not only

smells great on its own, and blends well with all other

kinds of oils, it is the greatest natural fixative.
