Hi,

Let me give you some infos about the origin of Bergamot :

This is from the 16emes journées internationales huiles essentielles Dignes

les Bains (France)

HYPOTHESES SUR L ORIGINE GENETIQUE DU BERGAMOTIER FONDEES SUR L ANALYSE

MOLECULAIRE.

(Mr Luro François & Mr Ollitrault Patrick)

ABSTRACT:

" The origin and genetic background of the bergamot is unknown but it has

been well established in the mediterraean aera for many centuries. Some

taxinomists as Dr W T Swingle considered bergamot like a spontaneous

mutation or natural variety of sour orange, but it seems that is an hybrid

origin and has described like a specy (Citrus bergamia Risso et Poiteau).

Numerous hypothesis have been suggested about his parents : sour orange

(citrus aurantium L.) sweet lime (Citrus limettioïdes Tan.),lemon (C. lemon

(L.) Burman f.) or citron (C. medica L.). In the purpose to certify one of

these possibilities we have compared the molecular diversity between several

species with different techniques : isozyme polymorphism, Restriction

Fragment Lenght Polymorphism of DNA and Random Amplified Polymorphism of

DNA. All these genetic markers give the same result : bergamot have a high

relationship with lemon and downless with sour orange and sweet lime. It

most probably has a sour orange as one parent and a lemon as the other. "

Hope this could be interesting for you.

For me in accordance with the International Seeds Trade Association and the

Florea Europea I give this latin name to bergamot :

Citrus bergamia Risso & Poiteau

or syn. Citrus autantium L. ssp bergamia (Risso & Poteau) Engler H.G.A.

Latin name or botanical name is the only way to be sure we speak about the

same thing.

It exists lot of confusion about the right variety botanic in EO (origanum

is a good example)

I work in France with some different Lavender, may I have a little resume

about this discussion .... if somebody could post me the more signifiant

posts..

>Lavendula Angustafolia / Officinalis / Vera discussion?) .....

Bye

Felix KC
