Guest guest
In message <942468912.30250 >, om writes Pam, I fully understand your reluctance to use Lavender in light of the unpleasant memories that Yardley conjures up. Different varieties of Lavender, however, have very different aromas. Try Lavendula Angustifolia. Lavendula Officianalis has a particularly pungent smell (for my taste anyway). Do let me know how you get on. Regards, -- Louise Green
Guest guest
OH Dear ... Here I go again. I'm going to look like " the bad guy " or a disagreeable know-it-all to some but I just gotta take that risk. In " real life " (and much to my own dismay) Lavender is one of those plants that has been named and renamed, cloned, hybridized and all mixed up. Lavendula angustifolia, Lavendula vera or Lavendula officinalis are in fact, one in the same. This doesn't mean all lavenders smell alike and it doesn't mean that many types (or specific species and / or chemotypes) do not exist. It just means that to call angustifolia a " different plant " than officinalis is technically not correct. Here is what a friend of mine wrote on another AT list awhile back .... >>Lavendula angustifolia - Components mostly linalyl acetate and linolol with some geraniol, etc. Indicated for calming, anti-inflammatory. Used for stress related conditions, insomnia and all types of skin conditions. Burns, abcesses, acne, bruises and boils and skin inflammations. Antispasmotic, analgesic and antiseptic. May stimulate leucocytosis - ie inhance the WBC count - so good for immunocompromised illnesses. Relatively safe for everyone including children and elderly in diluted form. Spike Lavender, Lavandula latifolia (also called Aspic) - Components are mostly Cineol 10% (oxide, Camphor (ketone),Linolol (alcohol) and Linalyl acetate (ester). This is a stimulent, therefore you would not want to use this particular lavender to help someone to calm down or to sleep. Do not use in anyone with a history of seizures. Used mostly for paralysis, rheumatism and arthritis. Powerful mucolytic action from camphor, and expectorant action from cineole). May be effective against E Coli, Porteus, Staph aureus, but not streptococcus. Indicated for cough, athletes foot and rhinitis. Also good for sprains, stiff joints, muscular pains and viral infections. Due to the high ketone content it has strong wound-healing properties. May induce menstruation. Do not use for persons age 12 and under or in the elderly. Good for someone who cannot cough up mucous. Good after a long drive to wake-up. Lavandin, Lavandula x intermedia (a cross between Lavandula angustifolia and Lavandula latifolia). Also refered to as Lavandula hybrida. Lavandin is also broken down further into varieties Super, Grosso, Reydovan and Abrialli. Probably safer for young and elderly than lavender angustifolia. Lavandula x intermedia cv Super is higher in linalyl acetate. High in esters. Antispasmotic, relaxing. Lavandula x intermedia cv. Grosso, Higher in alcohols. High in linolol for infections. Grosso represents 90% of the French production of Lavandin. Was shown to be very effective against non-tubercular opportunistic mycobacteria (NTM), common in AIDs. Lavandula x intermedia cv. Reydovan is higher in camphor. Mucolytic, expectorant. Lavandula x intermedia cv. Abrialis, 30-32% Esters, 30-38% Linalol, 7-11% Camphor, 6-11% 1,8 cineole. Has a good mixture of everything. infections, antispasmodic and relaxant. Guest guest
My last digest came through messed up with lines through all the typing. Is there a way to have the digest sent out a 2nd time, or should this be reported to the onelist administrators. Kimberly
