You can hardly let the client sniff all your oils (I've got about 90). So you make an educated guess, chose some that you think will be right, then let them make the final choice. Where's Ethembeni? We have a group of aromatherapists working voluntarily at Nazareth House, also with AIDS babies (as well as other projects) as part of our Aroma Care Plan. Ethembeni is an AIDS babies home run by The Salvation Army (also has a few HIV negative abandoned babies, but we try to find homes in which to place all babies and HIV negative ones usually get preference) in Doornfontein, Johannesburg. Doornfontein is the heart of our red light district, and it is definitely not the greatest of areas. It is wonderful working in this part of the world, because it always strikes me as being where the need is actually the greatest. Ethembeni has place for sixty babies, 8 mothers and 16 former commercial sex workers (who have already completed their addiction rehabilitation) and who are now being taught skills which should help them not return to the streets. I work with the commercial sex workers only insofar as I organise social activities for them when I organise social outings for a broad group of HIV+ adults. No aromatherapy for them, because I really don't have time. The babies and toddlers get my attention when a group of young people who are learning first aid and basic home care go, as volunteers, to help out at Ethembeni. The matron of Ethembeni is wonderful, and encourages my young people to help out. They also help at an eventide home. I would like these young people (St. John Ambulance Cadets) to learn a bit about aromatherapy, but I myself lack formal qualifications. :-( Maybe I should investigate the on-line training that other members discuss - what feedback have the others had on these subjects? Any e-mail addresses of " colleges " which offer this training? All the children are from our Salvation Army Children's Home, and I am a Salvation Army Officer.
