Aromatherapy and oil use

Hi Tammy,

A few answers to your questions.

Peppermint and lavender are oils that can be applied " neat " to the skin.

However most oils need to be blended with a " carrier " oil such as almond,

jojoba, etc.. You would blend the essential oil into the carrier oil by drops.

There are several books that give wonderful recipes and ratios, one of them

is " Aromatherapy for beauty, hair and skin care " by Keller.

Also when using a diffuser, ALWAYS fill the reservoir with water first and

then add oils by the drop. Never use straight oil in a diffuser-heated this

can become flammable. It is also way to strong to be inhaling. Water helps

to diffuse the oil into a much easier to absorb vapor that is much more

expansive. Inhaling oils without heating is also very effective and you will

feel the difference between warm and cold oils.

Grapefruit is a wonderful scent, but since it is a citrus it burns off rather

quickly. Lavender lasts longer and mixes well with just about everything. An

uplifting blend is Jasmine and Ylang Ylang-sweet floral-Jasmine is a euphoric

so it definitely raises your spirit. I also love citrus and tangerine and sweet

orange are my favorite and make a wonderful blend. Mix in a little Neroli for

a floral note and you have a beautiful mixture.

I hope this helps out some.

Aayla,

Thanks for the info! My diffuser seems to work much better

when I add water first :-). I guess I am lucky I didn't blow

up the place before I learned to use it correctly.

I burned some pink grapefruit oil in it last night and it smelled

great! But you are right. After I blew the candle out the smell

did not linger.

I am still looking for a good nebulizer.

Actually, the only oils that can be applied neat to the skin are

Lavender and Tea Tree, not peppermint....Peppermint is a very strong oil

and can irritate the skin, there is also the possiblity of sensitization

due to its menthol which comprises anywhere from 29-48% of the oil...It

is a non irritant if diluted but you should not use it in its

concentrated form...I know that people have done it with no apparent

immediate harm, but that is what sensitiztion is all about, it doesn't

show up right away...so please be careful :)
