Guest guest Posted October 3, 2007 Report Share Posted October 3, 2007 ‘MY HERBAL VILLAGE’ Union Minister to inaugurate ‘Herbal Village’ on 2nd October 2007 Pothencode: Santhigiri Ashram has given shape to a program ‘ My Herbal Village’ which will be formally inaugurated by Sri . S. Raghupathy, the Honorable Union Minister for Forest and Environment on Gandhi Jayanthi day, 2 pm, 2nd October, 2007. Through this project, the Ashram plans to distribute medicinal plants free of cost in Pothencode and Manikkal Panchayats in Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala for cultivation. The ashram will provide necessary assistance to the farmers for cultivation, maintenance of medicinal plants and also will buy back the same for its Ayurveda & Siddha production units, offering reasonable price to the cultivators. The medicinal plants, which can be cultivated at the fields or in the household gardens, can give yield to the farmers within six months, as per the Ashram officials. At a time natural and rare medicinal plants are getting extinct, this program is a laudable effort. Apart from its immense value for production of medicines, medicinal plant cultivation helps to prevent atmospheric pollution and spread of epidemics. Social forestation is one of the solutions for the dangerous trend of deforestation and destruction of ecology and project of this type indeed can realize the goal of social forestation. Perhaps it is for the first time such an experiment is being conducted in two Panchayats in India. This program will have the participation of local government bodies, cultural and social organizations to identify the farmers, spread awareness among the people through seminars and other programs to promote social forestation and medicinal cultivation. The program ‘ My Herbal Village’ will be spread to all districts in the state and other parts of the country in phases. Sri Mullakkara Ratnakaran, the Honorable Agricultural Minister will preside over the function associated with the launching of the program. Sri Varkala Radhakrishnan, Member of Parliament will deliver the keynote address. Other dignitaries expected to participate in the function are Sri Wahid, MLA, Smt. Arundhati, MLA, Sri Pirappancode Murali, CPM(M) District Secretary, Sri Koliyacode Krishnan Nair, Ex MLA, Sri Balachandran, Manikkal Panchayat President, Sri Vamadevan, Pothencode Panchayat President, Sri Ajit Kumar, Mangalapuram Grama Panchayat and other representatives from local cultural, political and social organizations.
