Picture by UB Photos Nov. 26: For those who had been meaning to take a trip down south to rejuvenate the body and soul, Kerala style, here?s good news. The first traditional ayurvedic residential centre, offering among other things the famous ayurvedic massage of Kerala, opened atop the Karnachal Hill in the city today with patients being treated under the eyes of trained ayurvedic doctors from Kerala. The centre, Santhigiri Vaidyashala, is a subsidiary of Kerala?s well known Santhigiri Ashram. It was inaugurated by Phani Sarma, former administrator of Guwahati Municipal Corporation. The traditional system of medicine is based on Panchakarma (five actions) which is a cleansing and rejuvenating programme for the body, mind and consciousness. It is known for its beneficial effects on overall health, wellness and self-healing. ?This centre brings to the people of the city and elsewhere in the region Kerala?s globally acclaimed traditional holistic healing science. It offers massages and herbal therapies by doctors from Kerala to cure various ailments,? regional head of Santhigiri, T.P. Anil said. ?The traditional South Indian ayurvedic form of treatment is considered the best across the globe. The Northeast, on the other hand, is home to the potent herbs. Combine the two and there is a perfect recipe for holistic healing,? he added. The herbs, which will be used, have been procured from all over the region and also from Santhagiri Ashram?s herbarium in Kerala. Apart from the ayurveda enthusiasts, the centre?s opening has generated interest among diverse segments. The state tourist department, for one, is upbeat over the development. An official said the opening of the centre could give a fillip to tourism in the city. ?Thousands of people, many of them from the Northeast, travel to Kerala for the famous ayurvedic treatment. These people from the region can now come to the city for the same. If properly marketed, the centre can even attract people from the neighbouring countries,? a tourism department official said. A view that was heartily endorsed by a professor of Government Ayurvedic College, P. Bhattacharjee, pointed out that in Kerala, tourism had promoted ayurveda and the same might be replicated in Assam if initiatives are taken. Anil informed that the residential centre, the first of its kind in the region, has 10 rooms besides separate wards for male and female patients. He added that the centre was set up in accordance with Santhagiri Ashram motto of taking Kerala?s traditional science of nature care to various parts of the country and beyond. ?Certain treatment requires the patients to be under the doctor?s close and constant watch. This can be done only when the patient is staying at a centre,? a doctor at the Vaidyashala said, adding that this will also help prescribe the correct diet. The Karnachal Hill centre also has two large halls for meditation. The two kitchens are manned by Malayali chefs to rustle up vegetarian diets strictly in accordance with the doctors? prescriptions. Officials said there would be a herbal garden and a kitchen garden within the premises to ensure fresh treatment material and dietary supplements. ?We will provide attractive and affordable healthcare packages,? Anil added. Find out what India is talking about on - Answers India Send FREE SMS to your friend's mobile from Messenger Version 8.
