Speaking at a function at Chandiroor in the district on Tuesday, organised by the Santhigiri Ashram, Pothencode, in connection with the declaration of Chandiroor as `Siddha-Ayurveda village,' Mr. Ramadoss said the United States and European countries had integrated their various systems of medicine successfully. He noted that about 30 per cent of the allopathic medicines in the U.S. market were plant-based. He

said that though Kerala was known outside for its Ayurvedic medicines, the Siddha medicine system too was well developed in certain parts of the State. The Santhigiri Ashram's Karunya health-care scheme which intended to take the health-care system to the doorsteps of the public would revolutionise the concept of community health care. The ashram had conducted a health survey in the village before implementing the scheme there. Lack of infrastructure The Minister said that insufficient infrastructure was hampering community health care in the country and adoption of villages by various missions and ashrams would go a long way in utilising minimal resources to the optimum level. K.S. Manoj, MP, who presided over the function, said the adoption of Chandiroor by the Santhigiri Ashram would definitely help the village that had been plagued by

pollution from the seafood processing units there. Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan delivered the keynote address. Those who spoke included Alappuzha district panchayat president R. Nazar, Coirfed chairman M.K. Abdul Gafoor and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee secretary Johnson Abraham. © Copyright 2000 - 2006 The Hindu
