`Science no more a tough mistress' Work for humanity: President Santhigiri Ashram Director Swami Gururethna Jnana Thapaswi, Governor R.L. Bhatia, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Law Minister M.Vijayakumar at a function held at the ashram in the city on Thursday IMAGE THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is nothing as good and bad science, it is universal. The choice lies with the user, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said in his interaction with the students of Santhigiri Siddha and Ayurvedic Medical Colleges here on Thursday evening. During his interaction with the students after a thought-provoking address on `Traditional

medicine our core competence', Dr.Kalam reminded them that nuclear energy which powers industry, agriculture and also health care, could also be used for making nuclear weapons. But again the choice rests with the person who wields it, he told Shanthibhooshan, a fourth year BSMS student. It all depends on how one works for humanity. If the security of the nation is at stake, the answer is defence, he said. Asked about his concept of development with comprehensive security, Dr.Kalam told Gopika Thuiyath, a third year BSMS student, that India is a nuclear State. "We know how to defend ourselves," he said. When Manu S.Sankar, a third year BAMS student, urged the President to reveal the secret of his success without a woman behind to guide him, the President said that he has a joint family with 92 members. His great grand daughter was two years old. Hard work, acquisition of knowledge and setting a goal to achieve make the recipe to

success, he said. When Gowri K.Parvathy, a third year BSMS student, sought his guidance on his concept `unity of minds,' Dr.Kalam said that this should be the common goal for all medical students. Students from different systems of medicine can work together for developing the best system that can give maximum benefit at minimum cost to the needy. Earlier in his address, Dr.Kalam said that the sidha and ayurveda hospitals in Santhigiri should conduct collaborative research with other hospitals in the country so that the diagnosis and treatment database would widen and lead to sharing of knowledge and good medical practices. He also stressed the need for networking the existing facilities and expertise to increase the pace of research and development in Indian traditional medicine. Santhigiri Ashram director Swami Gururethna Jnana Thapaswi welcomed the President. Law Minister M.Vijayakumar presided. Siddha

college principal V.Arunachalam proposed a vote of thanks. Governor R.L.Bhatia, Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy, J. Arundhathi, MLA, also were present. Dr. Kalam offered floral tributes at the 'Parnasala' of Karunakara Guru.
