Hi Greg or anyone who might know -

When I grind my Flax seeds up in the morning - I do it with sunflower and

almonds - makes it more palatable, and I sprinkle it over my rice cereal.

It usually makes enough for two mornings. Do I just put it in the fridge

till the next day? I heard from someone ages back that once you grind the

flax seed - it loses a lot of its nutrients within about 4 hours. This is

my concern leaving it till the next day. Does anyone know if this is true,

and is there a way around it if it is? Like freezing it perhaps/ I make

sure that my daily portion contains 1 tbsp. of flax BTW.

One of the websites selling flax seeds says that ground flax will

not be good after 24 hours at room temp, but will keep for a week in the

fridge. I can look up the URL if interested.

Your post is ambiguous.

" What, " are you putting in the fridge til the next day? What makes up your

" rice cereal? " Are you talking about using milk, soy milk, rice milk etc.?

Do you mean that you've " put in the fridge, " a dry mixture of flax meal

which you have added to dry sunflower seed and almonds, and to which you add

milk the next day?

Whatever you mean, if you put milk in an airtight container, the milk will

last as long as it would have in its original container, perhaps a week.

Flax meal is very perishable, but if it's in an airtight container, I'd

expect it to last about two weeks; but I'm just guessing here.

Hi Tracy,

According to the Canadian flax council, ground flax that was stored for, I

think, 10 months showed no rancidity. I buy

a kilo and grind 250 g at time. I place this in a sealed glass jar in the door

of my fridge and use in with-in a week.

We have gone longer and I have not noticed any change in taste. Remember that

mother nature has placed lots of Vit E in

those seeds and this protects the Omega 3 LNA fatty acids from oxidation. It is

only in commercial processing that this

natural protection gets stripped away.
