The Akins program, along with other plans that

recommend eliminating starch and sugar (the Protein

Power and Paleolithic Diets), is one of healthiest

programs you can follow.

The Atkins diet causes ketosis which can cause dramatic weight loss at first

(which seems great) because your kidneys have to get rid of these ketones, and

this takes a lot of water to flush this out of your body. So, much of the weight

loss initially is water. Ketosis changes your body's blood chemistry, and can be

dangerous for people with diabetes and those who are pregnant.

Eating alot of meat,

The Atkins diet causes ketosis which can cause dramatic weight loss at first

Look up ketosis on the internet, its not a healthy state to be in. If you

continue on this diet plan on having kidney problems later in life.

Atkins, Douglass, what about others?

Which doctors to trust? Not many, that is for sure.

What happened to Dr. Atkins?

Did he die or retire? I used to get his newsletter. Then.... Dr.

Campbell Douglass started writing it. I like his views better anyway.

No one says much about Dr. Campbell Douglass.

Obvioulsy, Ed, you have not read Drs. Atkins or Eades (Protein Power). I

suggest you read these books and educate yourself on the FACTS. Your opinion

borders on superstition along with the anticholesterol frenzy that abounds.

reason's way, not by popular say. " Montaigne (1533-1592)

I have never actually read the Atkins diet, but I do have

experience with my own high meat diet & have read much about ketosis. I

do not have references handy, but I did a lot of reading on ketosis when I

was diagnosed a diabetic 6 months ago. From what I read, ketosis (in

moderation) is not harmful so long as one has good kidneys. There is a

medical myth that eating lots of protein can cause one's kidneys to weaken

or fail, especially if one has diabetes. But I could find no evidence for

those statements. I did find some conjecture that kidney failure in

diabetics ( & others) was caused by the prescription drugs which many people

take year after year. After all, the kidneys must process the poisonous

prescription drugs many people put into their bodies day after day for

decades.

So, it seems to me, that it is not eating high protein which causes

kidney failure but scrip drugs. I am not saying a totally carnivorous diet

is healthy, for many reasons. But 2-3 times as much meat as the ADA

suggests seems far more natural & healthy to me, when eaten in balance with

other food groups (organic, where possible). I personally find that I can

safely control my blood glucose levels without diabetic medicines by eating

a high meat/fish diet.

I chose this course of action because I feel the dangers of daily

intake of diabetic drugs is not good for me -- for dozens of reasons. I

feel the danger of kidney failure are far less with a high meat diet than

they are with a low meat plus diabetic drugs. I have not yet found enough

evidence on this to " prove " my statements. But I could find no clear

evidence to say I am wrong, either.

I apologize for the lack of supporting evidence & links to

informative URLs, but when I began my quest for information, I was doing so

only for my own use & had no thought that I would oneday be on this list &

want to share my findings with others.

Alobar

PS

Since joining this list I have read many things about diet which I do

not understand or which I disagree with. When possible, I ask questions,

read supporting websites from the URLs people kindly post, and otherwise try

to understand. But even when I read all I can & still do not agree, I

respect the right of others to make different value judgements than I do.

Our lives -- and the quality of our lives -- are all at stake here, and I

feel it is up to each of us to read all we can, evaluate what we read as

best we can & then act on our convictions. I sure can't say that what seems

like it will work for me necessarily applies to anyone else.

it much too much, but consider that probably 7 of those pounds was water.

Sorry if this is something someone else has already covered the

following, I've been away from email for a while....

The Ketosis generally begins in the 4th to 8th day, and it's only for

the first 14 days that ketosis is even in the picture. Then it's on

to veggies and specific fats and proteins. If one eats incorrectly

for long enough to become overweight to the point that that alone is

jeopardizing health...what's 14 days? And the affects do not last a

lifetime. Some are sensitive to this process, but there are MANY

other processes that are less restrictive that work also.

Thank GOD for Dr. Atkins. He allowed many others to step up to take

the reigns to prove the low cholesterol/high carb diets are KILLING

us. They are fatteners...again...look at how cattle are

fattened.....grains...which are carbs. And surely, you can't believe

that cutting sugar from the diet is not a wise thing to do??

Blessings

It has been a while since I read Atkins, but I always drink at

least 1/2 oz of water for every pound of body weight. I believe it

may have been Atkins from whom I first learned this, maybe not.

However, sweeping toxins from the body is most important. So if one

looses a lot of " water weight " they most likely are not following

water intake instructions. I was amazed at the putrified toxins

leaving my body and was thrilled to be drinking enough water to allow

them exit space.

Evening Pam,

>You are both a scolar and a gentleman!

My old boss used to say it differently. He would say......

" you are a gentleman and a scholar "

He would tell me this when I did something right or pleased him in some way.

I have wondered for years where this phrase originated and who said it first.

Hi Wayne,

Maybe it is not quite the compliment it is usually meant to be.

QUOTATION: Take a decayed Christian ... and the remains of a Stoic; mix

thoroughly with good manners, a bit of money and an old-fashioned

education; simmer for several years in a university. Result: a scholar

and a gentleman. Well, there were worse types of human being.

ATTRIBUTION: Aldous Huxley (1894?), British novelist. William Propter,
