COLD-FLU

First the bad news. The best way to treat a cold or flu is thru

prevention & by catching it before the symptoms get bad -- too late for this

now, but something to think about for next time. The first is daily dose

of vitamin C. I take 4,000 mg of Vitamin C twice a day when I do not have

a cold. At the first sign of cold symptoms, I put hydrogen peroxide into

each ear (tipping head so it does not run out) & hold there for 15 seconds

or so. Most cold & flu stuff comes in thru the ears not the mouth, so if

this is done at first symptoms, colds can be stopped dead in their tracks.

I also use Echinacea. I do not take daily or even regularly. Just when I

am feeling a slight bit " off " . I use non-alcoholic liquid drops. I use 2

droppersful once a day. I squirt directly into my mouth & let it slowly

trickle down my throat. Echinacea plus goldenseal is wretched tasting,

goldenseal is expensive, and goldenseal is not nearly as effective for

colds/flu as Echinacea. So I use plain Echinacea.

Now the good new. Once can combat a cold in progress. It just

takes more work. I do the peroxide ear washes twice daily, even though it

won't do a lot of good with the cold one already has -- it just helps stop

reinfection. Next I up my Echinacea dose to 2 ml x 4 times a day. And I

take much more vitamin C. Taking too much vitamin C will give one the runs.

The sicker one is, the more vitamin C one can take without getting the runs.

Some take 100-150 grams a day. I do not take nearly that much. I start

out with 8 grams in the morning & have another 2-4 grams every 4 hours. If

I am not feeling better by nightfall, I start taking 2 grams every hour.

Before bed I take another 8 grams, and anticipate having to run to the

bathroom once before dawn.

Water is another big thing. Most people are chronically dehydrated

& do not even know it! They drink all sorts of stuff which quenches thirst,

but which really cause more problems. Quenching thirst is like using pain

killer for pain instead of dealing with stopping the reason why one hurts.

Water is (IMO) the *only* thing to drink when one is thirsty. When I am

well, I drink at least 2 quarts of water a day. When it is hot out, I am

exerting myself, or if I have a cold, my water intake goes up. The sicker

I am, the more water I try to drink.

Proper sleep is another thing many people are chronically deficient

in. We train ourselves to sleep less & less. Not good! One needs a

*minimum* of 8 hours each & every day. When one is sick with a cold, 10-12

hours is more advisable. When sick, I tend towards 8-9 hours at night plus

1 or 2 naps of 1/2-2 hours each.

I would also make sure I took a good multi vitamin with plenty of B,

drank some home-made chicken soup with no sugar, MSG, or salt made from

organic chickens if possible (roast the chicken first, then make into soup

for best flavor).

If I am not sleepy but know I should rest, I try doing some

strenuous indoor exercise, take a hot bath, and have a small glass of warm

milk.

Keeping the mucous flowing is real important in clearing up a cold.

So I drink some milk so I produce mucous & avoid the drugs (pseudofed) which

dry up the mucous. If mucous gets too thick, I use guaifensin syrup.

Robitussin is a good tasting brand, but I usually buy a cheaper drugstore

brand which duplicates the formula. Be sure to avoid syrups which contain

anything other than guaifensin.

In case you are wondering why I learned so much about cold care, I

work outside at night year round. Even in New Orleans, winter night

temperatures are often below 40 & I sometimes work in light rains. It

took me years to figure out I am best off by making sure I did not get

colds, so a lot of time was treating bad colds so I could get back to work

with as little lost time as possible.

Good luck with your flu.

Vit C of course does help. A friend uses a brand called Emergent C.

It's powder to mix with juice or water. Seems to work well.

Although I have not had a cold for several years, last time I used a

blend of essential oils. If one has the oils to blend it, it can be

extremely helpful -- midigates all colds and flu I have administered

it for within 24 hours. Any therapeutic oils that have anti-viral

action, and most do, will help a great deal. Placing them on the feet

allows them to be absorped into the body within 20 minutes and the

feet are usually not an uncomfortable place to put the " hot " oils. I

use oregano, thyme, basil, and marjorum. The blend is extensive, if

anyone wants the recipe, I'll post it. Eucalyptus is wonderful to

diffuse or put in steaming water and breath vapors. Peppermint also

works wonders used this way.

Blessings

Caution: I found out the hard way. If one is allergic to ragweed, do

not use Golden Seal. It can cause serious problems for breathing.

Also: having a " comprimised " liver at one point in my life an ND

suggested I be careful with Vit. C as too much of it when liver is not

healthy can cause liver to work at even lower capacity. He suggested I

take no more than 150 -200 mg per day and to do that a little at a

time.

These are good reasons why, as someone just recently said in a post,

it is important to work with a good ND or Chiropractor with some of

these issues.

Francie,

I'm glad you mentioned that,...I take between 1,000 and 2,000

daily, but am very aware of the way excess C can deplete some mineral

stores.

Stinging Nettle is an excellent remedy for allergies. I've heard

quite a few adverse things concerning Goldenseal. It is said to be

good for recovering from chemo. That I wouldn't know...I don't think

anything would help one recover from that.

Echinacea is good for short term use, although over a long period

of time it's said to cause memory loss. Hmmm, not good at all. One is

supposed to use it only two weeks at the max, I've heard.
